Technically superior film, plot too thin, overall, its so overrated.
alijuly1st16 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I watched Sukob here at Cerritos, CA because of the heavy promotions it had on TFC, plus with all the claims that it was to date, the highest grossing "Filipino film of all time". I must say that I'm impressed with the technical aspect of the film. Chito Rono's films have been visually superior before, and Sukob is no exception. I'm really excited with his film-making style and given the chance to direct a movie here in Hollywood with a Hollywood budget and equipment, I believe he will be at par or even better than M Knight or say, Christopher Nolan. Anyways, what Sukob lacks is a credible, logical plot, well, OK, since this is a movie, and since they did put effort on the technical side, we could forgive the silly plot. But, given its silly plot, the movie went a very predictable route, again, maybe we could spare its predictability a bit, the movie did made up for its good sound, stunning cinematography and ensemble performance. But what seems to be the problem with this movie? Why does it still feel lacking? My answer is, the ending, where they killed off Kris Aquino's character, (and to remind the viewer's about the medium's warning that someone has to die, they played her voice over, what are we stupid?) they should've let her live, I believe it would've been more satisfying. Here is where the movie falters, when it tried to be "credible", where in fact the plot wasn't in the first place. I mean, if you know you have a plot that is problematic in the beginning, stick with it, the supposed "curse" wasn't really explain well, and the superstitious belief of 2 siblings getting married in the same year or a death in a family and marriage in a year spells bad luck, c'mon, it sounds silly! But since people believe in that, we have to respect that, but, another but, that doesn't mean that it'll be a good plot for a horror film. Again, I'm gonna contradict myself, Sukob was a technically-good film, but as for story and weight, its very thin. The issue with this film is although it is good, it's so overrated.

Copycat???
AddictedForReel8 March 2010
I don't think this film is a copycat of the Japanese film "Ringu" or "The Ring". Hollywood has copied the story and almost the same plot but "Sukob" probably just copied the style of "Ringu". It's quite scary and the story is a bit suspense. The film is not so great. Actors and actresses are very good. Just don't compare it to other films from other countries and you'll enjoy it. Watch it with a low expectation. Films coming from different countries has different cultures or way of delivering it. This is a breakthrough in Philippine film industry. Hope they would come out to something really original and a progress like Thai and Korean films.

Supernatural Melodrama
el720 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As a melodrama, this film works quite well. As a horror film, not so much. The story line progresses at what might at first appear to be nonlinear narrative, but it eventually becomes clear that's not the case as the stories converge from an unexpected angle. This was a worthy attempt at misdirection that didn't quite come off. However, the family secret plot did become gripping and even moving to watch play out. It's just that there were so many missed opportunities to amp up the horror element. Just one example involves the fact that the evil spirit closely resembles some dressed-up festival goers at one point in the story. What an opportunity to ramp up the tension and build up a thrilling scene, but it was wasted on one cheap jump scare. If you're interested in a family drama you've come to the right place, but if you're looking for a scary movie that's not really what you're going to find here.

Rip off
infinite-warstrike9 August 2006
How did this become a blockbuster? Dear God I don't know where to start why this movie sucked too much. The movie was predictable & there was no originality. The only thing I can admire is the acting of some characters. The movie was too bright, they should have done something with the lighting, eg. making the environment more darker. The make up on certain dead characters made this movie look like a 1970 horror flick. This is 2006! People don't get scared by other people wearing heavy make up. Most of the horror scenes we're taken from other Hollywood or Asian horror movies. Total rip off! This is why I don't watch tagalog movies. The only reason why so many people "screamed" while watching this movie is because of conformity. How many times do we have to copy scenes from The Ring and improvise it that instead of the girl coming out of the TV, its now coming from the window next door? No matter how you put it, ITS STILL A RIP OFF. If you want a good horror movie, go watch the 50 best horror movie listed on this website.

gawd awful...

i would have given this movie a 1 out of 10 if it weren't for ms. Claudine Barretto's performance. and i will take this time to overlook that Kris Aquino's here. and... end.

i really AVOID watching Pinoy horror movies because stories lack originality and i really think that (some) writers don't give enough attention to the characters (and their progression) in their stories (redundant??). it was as if they 'pushed' the movie onwards when their storytelling stank. and my goodness, creative exhaustion led them to rip-off other movies. why?? why did this movie get a good review?? i wouldn't give it that much merit. the movie was KIND OF scary, but the movie seemed more freaky as it deals with Filipino folklore... it goes into my list of 'most likely to happen' category. i just wished they spent more time improving the story lines and fix those flash back sequences, never mind if the lighting sucked, it wouldn't matter much if the content would blow you away.. SAYANG.

Should be titled "Copycat"
jvongill30 August 2007
Oh dear. I was so disappointed that this movie was just a rip-off of Japan's Ringu. Well, I guess the U.S. made their version of it as well, but at least it was an outright remake. So, so sad. I very much enjoy watching Filipino movies and know some great things can come out of such a little country, so I can't believe this had to happen. Claudine and Kris are such big names there, surprised they would be affiliated with plagiarism. To any aspiring movie makers out there in the Philippines: You do not have to stoop this low to make money. There are many movie buffs that are watching the movies Filipinos put out and enjoying them!

I barely remember this film...
SyoKennex7 January 2020
Around the World in 196 Films Country 3: Philippines Film: Sukob (The Wedding Curse) Director: Chito S. Rono Rating: 2/5 (4/10)

Sukob follows two women who get married only to find that a curse follows them, causing people in their lives to come to a tragic end or to simply disappear.

Sukob had a very good opening, including being one of the first horror films to jump scare me in about... 5 months? But after a promising first 20 minutes this film just... starts going downhill. This film becomes bland, not something desperately keeping your interest but just enough to keep it on whilst doing something else. I ended up doing laundry and cleaning my living room as I watched this, not really wanting to pay attention to it, but also not really wanting to turn it off either - one of those average films.

I didn't really like any of the characters; they all felt boring and pretty underdeveloped. There wasn't any character I wanted to see survive the film, or do well for themselves in anyway, and the cast didn't really feel like they were giving it their all either.

I can't remember how this film ended, if things were resolved, I'm pretty sure I forgot the entire last thirty minutes of the film - and I definitely watched it to the end credits. With the plot? Forgetting an entire quarter of the film doesn't exactly bother me, either - I won't be losing sleep over the fact I can't remember that one defining plot point.

This started off a decent 6, maybe even 7, out of 10 film, but slowly drifted down into nothing but a 4 and with little to hold it from dropping lower. I won't be checking out the director's other works, either, not with this being the first film I was introduced to him with.

Not scary
scrottie-mcboogerballs22 February 2022
Watch FungShui 2, that is a better movie of the pinoy horror genre. This movie didn't scare me at all. The plot was all over the place and the acting was sub par.
