In this agreeable second episode of the series, writer Clyde Phillips and director Michael Cuesta juggle a couple of subplots while keeping us up to date on the activities of Dexter Morgan. Dexter enjoys a period of quiet before figuring out who his next victim will be: Matt Chambers (Sam Trammell), an alcoholic who'd killed a young man while driving drunk. Debra gets the assignment to Homicide that she'd been hoping for. A detective is found dead, and when Doakes and LaGuerta go to inform his wife, it turns out she'd been attacked as well. And the other killer in town, the Ice Truck driver, continues to taunt the cops and play sick games with Dexter that of course our hero actually finds irresistible.
This concept remains great fun in a darkly humorous sort of way. There's also some poignancy in the way that Dexter and Rita realize that sex is a stumbling block in their relationship; Dexter remains sensitive to her feelings. The actors are all great as usual, and get a chance to flesh out their characters a little more. For one thing, we learn a little more about Doakes. The guest stars are likewise enjoyable: Geoff Pierson as Police Captain Matthews, Rudolf Martin as drug kingpin Carlos Guerrero, Cristos as his henchman Norberto Cervantez, and C.S. Lee as Vince Masuka.
There's still a lot of pleasure in watching a character like Dexter go about his work as he eliminates human vermin from the face of the Earth. All in all, this is another good story.
