I admit I have not seen every single Futurama episode but I personally believe that "Insane in the Mainframe" is the BEST episode in the existence of the Futurama series,It had everything - excellent writing(very funny scenes)The character "Roberto the Robot" was hilarious ,The plot was great from start to finish and the New Setting(an Insane Asylum) made this episode in my Opinion unique from the other Futurama Episodes .The movie-lovers watching this episode may also notice as I did, a few hints of "One flew over the cuckoo's" nest and/or "Brazil/1984" . In summary, the Episodes which Fry and Bender have all the camera time are in fact my favourites.

Fry gets certified then goes insane
Tweekums25 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After realising he has made no pension provisions Fry goes to the bank to start a savings account; while there Bender bumps in to his old friend Roberto... just before he robs the bank! Roberto makes his getaway leaving Fry and Bender each holding a bag full of money. They are arrested, tried and sent to an asylum for insane robots... despite Fry protesting that he is human. As the robot doctors refuse to believe Fry is human his nerves get more and more frayed; he is given electric shocks to calm him, fed robot oil and is forced to share a tiny room with Malfunctioning Eddie... the robot who keeps exploding. Eventually he thinks he is about to be released but in fact it is Eddie who is freed and Fry gets an even worse room-mate... Roberto the insane bank robber! Not able to cope he eventually comes to believe that he is indeed a robot... a belief that gets him released! Once out he still considers himself a robot; which puts him in grave danger when he confronts the escaped Roberto.

This episode contains some good laughs; Roberto is particularly funny in his own psychotic way and it was nice to see Malfunctioning Eddie again. For such a funny programme Fry looks genuinely disturbed and his breakdown feels believable as he descends into madness. The asylum setting obviously gets 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' references but you don't need to have seen that film to enjoy the jokes.

funny situation, few laughs
nerrdrage17 September 2023
This is one of those Futurama episodes where the situation is funny even when there aren't a lot of jokes that elicit guffaws of laughter. For example, the episode later on where the professor creates a time machine that only goes to the future. Funny situation but there are also laughs. With this one, I kept waiting for the jokes.

But I did like this episode a lot since it represents character evolution for Fry. When he started out, it seemed like Fry was more of a cliche than a character - the dimwitted young male - but as it's progressed, Futurama has developed him into one of the best characters in animated series.

One of the funniest episodes
OceanRacoon11 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the funniest episodes of Futurama out there in the telly. Roberto is one of the funniest and diverse literary characters ever invented, and he is endlessly quotable. "Stand back I gotta practice mah stabbin'", and "IT WAS NOT Nothing!!!" impress the hell ou of girls. In fact, this whole episode is a quote miners gold mine. I find myself shouting "Change places!!" and running at people that are eating at every opportunity. There is also a nice reference to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Watch this episode if you don't want to die unfulfilled. I have to write two more lines. Fry's psychological breakdown and descent into madness is hilarious, as is the BEEP he makes after Leela kisses him.

Doesn't miss a mark in a perfect lampoon of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

It's not really funny

I don't know. I'm usually fine with black humor but I felt really bad for for Fry in this episode so It wasn't really funny. I wanted to laugh not to feel miserable.
