The idea of Lister and Rimmer kissing was originally intended for an earlier episode in which a cyberspace couple inhabit their bodies. That episode never came to fruition. Craig Charles and Chris Barrie actually kissed for much longer than shown but it was reduced much to their disappointment.
The shooting of the Rimmer Experience sequence was very tough on the cast. It took all day to shoot and they suffered injuries from being thrown around in the car. The cast refers to that day as "Black Wednesday". Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules, Robert Llewellyn and Chloë Annett, although remaining in character, were not acting at the end of The Rimmer's Experience scene: their reactions were genuine. Charles, John-Jules and Llewellyn absolutely hated filming the scene and were really irritated about how long the scene took the film. But Annett enjoyed filming the scene and her smile was real.
Long-time composer Howard Goodall performed as the singing Rimmer Munchkins during The Rimmer Experience.
The shots of Starbug flying through the icy tail of a comet was accomplished through both model shots of the model getting pelted with ice, and also CGI. The latter Doug Naylor was very unhappy with, especially since there was no motion blur, which had to be altered last-minute. This, along with the shots of planets and nebulae in the background whilst on the planetoids, Naylor was unhappy with and has stated his wish to one day Remaster the whole of Series VII. (Series VII DVD Collector's booklet) Different versions, alternate takes and extended cuts of both these model shots and CGI shots are available for viewing on the Series VII DVD special features.
