YANCY DERRINGER "Gallatin Street" 1958
This 1958-59 series is about a card sharp, who returns home to New Orleans three years after the end of the Civil War. The man, Jock Mahoney, finds the city full of Northern carpet bagging types. He is secretly put to work as an undercover man by the city commissioner, Kevin Hagen. Mahoney is to keep Hagen advised on the various low-life types running wild in the city. He does this with the help of his Pawnee bodyguard, X. Brands. The series ran for a total of 34 episodes.
In this episode, the second of the series, we find Yancy Derringer, (Jock Mahoney) having a late night meeting with the city commissioner, Kevin Hagen. Hagen wants Mahoney to look into a small 3 block area known as, Gallatin Street. The area is run by thug, Claude Akins. Akins and his men are a law unto themselves and the Police have lost control of the area. Robbery, gambling and murder seem to be the street's most popular activities.
The dockside meeting is interrupted when a man, John Qualen, runs by with a large gentleman in pursuit. Mahoney, and his man, X Brands dispose of the hold-up man. Qualen, thanks Mahoney and asks which way to Gallatin Street. He is the Captain of a Swedish ship that just docked. He is looking for a hot night spot to get "oiled" and play a few games of chance.
Mahoney warns Qualen that he will most likely get robbed if he hits the street. Qualen just smiles and says he can take care of himself. Mahoney points out the way to him.
Mahoney also hits the area looking for the boss, Akins. The two men know each other from before the Civil War. Mahoney had went to war, Akins had not. The two men share a drink and talk of old times, they are not friends, but have a healthy respect for each other's abilities. Mahoney again runs into the Sea Captain, Qualen, who is losing a fortune on a game Mahoney tells him is rigged. He steers Qualen away from the place and tells him all the games are crooked.
Just as Mahoney is leaving, he sees a woman from his past, Paula Raymond. Mahoney knew Raymond from before the war, she was from a well-respected family and he wonders what she is doing here. She is dressed up like a harlot. Akins sees the look on Mahoney's face and laughs. Raymond's family had fallen on hard times and Akins has put her to "work" in his establishment. Mahoney intends to rectify this.
The next night, Mahoney returns bringing along his Pawnee bodyguard, X. Brands and his new friend, John Qualen. They have brought a little something to even the odds against Akins and his crew. Qualen has a load of that new Swedish invention, "dynamite". A few sticks down the chimney soon puts paid to Akins' men. Akins and Mahoney draw down on each other with Akins collecting a belly wound. Hagen and a large body of Policemen arrive and take control of the area. The wounded Akins and his men are hauled off for a long stay on a chain gang. Miss Raymond is now free to rejoin her family.
An entertaining episode all around, with solid writing and excellent direction moving it right along. Suppling the story and screenplay are husband and wife team, Richard Sale and Mary Loos. Writer, producer and director Sale, is best known for his work on, WHITE BUFFALO, TORPEDO RUN, ABANDON SHIP, SUDDENLY, THIS SIDE OF THE LAW, A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK and THE INSIDE STORY.
The episode director was William F.Claxton. Claxton is known to most western fans for his work on the superb 1967-71 western series, THE HIGH CHAPARRAL. He directed several hundred episodes of various series including over 50 of BONANZA. His feature films include, STAGECOACH TO FURY and THE QUIET GUN.
