Gabrielle shows that she is a capable warrior. Salmoneus was a scene-stealer in his touching scene grieving for Xena. Some great action. Some comedy. Some drama.

Warning: Spoilers
Xena is poisoned right when some villagers and their friend, Lord Seltzer, need help and protection from Talmadeus and his army. With Xena facing death, it's up to Gabrielle to take her place.

Salmoneus as Lord Seltzer was hilarious. Basically, his magic elixir is soda water. Lol.

It was Callisto from the next episode that poisons Xena. Notice she has her own music.

So Xena didn't die. Just went really "under" like a really slow heartbeat? This is the first episode of many where one of the leads "die" and then comes back. Although here technically Xena wasn't dead. But still, everyone thought she was.

This episode has some great lines including playful banter between Xena and Gabrielle:

Xena: "Sometimes you have to have patience with things that annoy you."

Gabrielle: "Oh, I never said she annoyed me."

Xena: "I wasn't talking to you."

Thankfully Gabs and Argo start getting along in this episode. I loved that Argo sort of talked to the other horse in order not to tear Xena apart. Argo has her own feisty personality, she should have had her own Saturday morning cartoon back in the day.

This episode had one of the most memorable lines in the series: Xena: "It's not about me. It's about these people. That's why we're here. People like this used to be my victims. I keep that in mind every time we come up against a warlord like Talmadeus. It's the greater good. Remember that." That pretty much sums up Xena's entire redemption inspiration to help others and the set-up for the premise of the show.

Gabs as Xena started out pretty shaky, but she had some great moments, such as when Xena collapsed in her first fight with Talmadeus, and she threw her staff to stop him from killing Xena. Later she's like a full-on warrior when she fights to get to Xena's "body." She took out many of the soldiers. She really has a handle on using her staff. Say again why in season 3's 'The Deliverer,' was she relegated to "needs babysitting" status and isn't fighting beside Xena? Seeing her here, it's clear she would be a valuable asset in any battle. Not to mention she started doling out orders on how to create a defense, part of her learning experience from Xena.

When they thought Xena was dead, it should have been Gabrielle's grief that was the most touching. But I was actually more moved by Salmoneus' grief. Robert Trebor did a great job here with his facial expressions and as he lamented, "Proud Warrioress. I will miss you." I haven't forgotten that Salmoneus was the first to see another side to Xena in Hercules TLJ, or that he rooted for her in the gauntlet scene, and rallied for her to Hercules. He has never gotten enough credit for his support of Xena from the very beginning. Later Salmoneus humbly hands himself over to Talmadeus, in exchange for leaving the villagers alone. It didn't work as Tanmadeus betrayed that deal, but it showed that Salmoneus is indeed capable of great unselfish deeds despite seeming cowardly at times. I think he was a scene-stealer in this episode. That's not to say Gabs' grief wasn't just as significant, because it was. It's just I was more moved by Salmoneus.

Xena still manages to get it some funny lines after her bout with death:

Talmadeus: "I'm glad you're not dead. It would have robbed me of this."

Xena: "Well, it would have saved me from your breath."

Lol.

Great episode. Gabrielle shows that she is a capable warrior as she further develops as a character. Salmoneus was a scene-stealer. Some great action. Some comedy. Some drama. Xena is awesome as usual despite being "dead" for half the episode. Love the scene when she gets hit by the poison dart and pulls it out. Great expressions by Lucy Lawless. Don't miss the next episode where Xena comes face-to-face with Callisto who poisoned her here. 8/10.

Salute to Xena - A 25th Anniversary Review

Warning: Spoilers
Xena and Gabrielle must protect an innocent village from an evil warlord. However, having been struck by a poisonous dart, Xena starts to suffer from debilitating illness. Will she be able to hold on? Will Gabrielle be able to help both Xena and the village during this desperate time?

SYNOPSIS

Xena and Gabrielle find themselves in a small skirmish with evil forces. It's nothing out of the ordinary, but suddenly Xena receives a hit from a poisoned dart. It's unknown who fired the shot, and only time will tell the effects upon Xena's body. Xena, with Gabrielle following her under cover of the forest, tracks down the evil warlord Talmadeus. He has been terrorizing an innocent village, and Xena has no problem whipping his men. However, she suddenly is fallen due to failure of her legs to remain steady, and Gabrielle saves her just in the nick of time before falling to Talmadeaus' sword. They retreat to the local village where Xena can get some rest. Hopefully Talmadeaus leaves the innocent people alone.

While at the village they reconnect with Salmoneus, the huckster businessman with a shady reputation. It turns out that he had recently conned Talmadeus by selling the warlord faulty weapons. This caused Talmadeus and his men to lose a battle, and now they're coming back to the village for revenge. Also, Xena's legs have completely failed her, and she's relegated to sitting on the floor of a storage house in the village. It is up to Gabrielle to save the day. The scheme is for Gabrielle to dress like Xena and ride Argo out into the field and confront Talmadeus and his band. Hopefully the sight of a healthy "Xena" will scare them off. Gabrielle rides off, but things don't work as planned.

Talmadeus and his men aren't fooled by Gabrielle, and they almost capture her. Fortunately, Argo comes to her aid, and she rides back to the village while under pursuit. Xena's arms still work, and she uses her Chakram to defend Gabrielle as she returns. With Xena's body failing, the village and con artist Salmoneus are panicked on what to do. In the night some of Talmadeus' men sneak into town and almost kill the severely debilitated Xena. Shortly thereafter Salmoneaus and the townsfolk believe that Xena has succumbed to her illness. They inform Gabrielle who is of course devastated. She will bury Xena next to her brother which was where she wanted to be put to rest.

Salmoneus and Gabrielle debate between running off or staying to defend the town from Talmadeus. Salmoneus decides to take Xena's body to the warlord. This is really all the con artist's fault, and he hopes that by surrendering to Talmadeus, and bringing along Xena's body, he can convince the warlord to spare the town. Talmadeus is not a kind man, and he plans to sell the villagers into slavery. Furthermore, he takes credit for killing Xena, and he plans to tear her limbs off her dead body through the use of several horses. One of the horses is Argo, and she refuses to comply with Talmadeus' sick wishes. Suddenly Xena springs to life! She's not happy at Talmadeus' abuse of the villagers as well as Argo. It's pretty easy work for Xena and company to win this fight, and the village is saved. Turns out that the poison only had a temporary paralyzing effect which wore off over a few hours.

NOTES

Gabrielle has tremendous courage when Xena is out of commission. Salmoneus is a huge problem, and his schemes are liable to get innocent people killed.

Enter: Talmadeus

In a battle, someone has targeted Xena and deliberately poisoned her with a dart.

It does not affect her immediately but certainly hinders her when Xena battles evil warlord Talmadeus. He is after Lord Seltzer who swindled him by selling him dodgy weapons which were ruined when wet.

Now Talmadeus suspects that Xena is out of sorts and is there for the taking. An injured Xena has to persuade Gabrielle to pretend to be Xena to save the village being rampaged by Talmadeus.

Gabrielle has difficulties in fitting into Xena's clothes, is a little too short and Xena's horse is reluctant to obey Gabrielle's commands.

Xena is certainly out of action in this episode as her body fights the poison. Gabrielle definitely needs pepping up by Lord Seltzer who is an effervescent personality who brings a lot of fun and froth in this episode.
