Salute to Xena - A 25th Anniversary Review
skullface20207 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
What would the world be like if Xena never became a warrior? How would her life, and that of Gabrielle, have been different? Xena gets a chance to discover the answer to these questions.

SYNOPSIS

Xena and Gabrielle travel to a temple in order to pay their respects to Lyceus, Xena's dead brother, on the 11th anniversary of his death. While there some warriors attack the facility, and Xena takes them out. Once the dust settles Xena becomes very troubled that a warrior she just killed appears to be very young. While reflecting on this in the temple, she is visited by the three Fates; goddesses of this very temple. To thank her for protecting the place, they offer Xena a wish. She wishes that she never became a warrior. Well, that's something that they could deliver on, and they make her wish into reality. However, before doing this they tell her that if she ever draws someone's blood in battle, then everything will immediately revert back to the Xena Warrior Princess timeline from where she came.

Xena is transported back to her home town. She's in civilian clothing, and her beloved younger brother Lyceus is there! She's so happy, and she's soon reunited with Maphias, her betrothed. This kind of startles Xena at first, but he's a decent guy, so she goes along with it and enjoys the company of her supportive family and community. However, in this life she never defended her hometown, and her mother has already been killed and buried. Furthermore, warlords and arm dealers Mezentius (season 1 episode 5) and Krykus (season 1 episode 10) are basically running the show in the area, and their minions terrorize innocent civilians. However, the worst is when Gabrielle suddenly enters Xena's line of sight. Instead of being a wide-eyed smiling young lady, she's a slave to Mezentius! Xena knows that she must break into the warlord's castle and free Gabrielle.

Once she sneaks into the fortress used by the evil warrior alliance she finds Gabrielle, but things don't go as they seem. Gabrielle is creeped out by Xena's presence, and she doesn't want to join her and escape. Gabrielle lives a very difficult life, and has no reason to trust Xena who is a stranger to her. Fortunately Xena is persuasive, and she also has no problems knocking out some warriors and helping Gabrielle fly the coop. She takes Gabrielle back to the inn where Lyceaus and Maphias can be found. However, Maphias goes behind their backs and reports Gabrielle to the evil thugs. He did this since he was super worried about everyone's safety, and he thought that the warriors would just reclaim enslaved Gabrielle and leave everyone else alone. He was wrong, and they're all arrested. Lyceaus tries to give Xena a sword to help defend herself, but she refuses to use such a weapon where she will shed blood and revert to being a warrior.

Xena, Gabrielle, and Lyceaus are locked up, but Maphias sneaks into the castle and comes to their rescue. He realizes that he goofed up by trusting the bad guys, and now he's fully on board to fight for the freedom of those he loves. Lyceaus, ever so brave, rushes to the dining hall to battle all the bad guys! Xena, Gabrielle, and Maphias follow. They're doing pretty well, but Xena is still refusing to use a deadly weapon. However, things change when she sees Gabrielle kill someone with a sword. Xena realizes that this isn't really her world. Even though she lost Lyceaus after she became a warrior, maybe the world was better off that way. She kills a guy, and is suddenly back to the timeline where she is a Warrior Princess. However, instead of killing the young man outside the temple, she trips him up. Under threat of her sword, she makes him promise that he'll run home and give up the life of a warrior. Xena, now reunited with the Gabrielle that she knows so well, is back to her good old self and they're on to the next adventure.

NOTES

Even though she had once done many bad things as a warrior, it's still good that Xena chose this path since she can now do so much to help the innocent and decent folk of the world.

Enter: Lyceaus, Maphias

Remember Nothing
Prismark1023 December 2019
The episode starts off with some exotic martial arts like the one practised in Brazil. Xena and Gabrielle are on their way to a temple to honour Xena's late brother, Lyceus. They are attacked by a masked man, Xena kills him but the attacker is a youth and Xena feels guilty over his death.

The Three Fates appear and thank her for defending the temple. They offer Xena an opportunity to erase her past, bring the dead youth back to life. However she must never shed blood in anger again.

Xena returns to a life before she became a warrior. Her young brother Lyceus is alive and despite the taunting of the Fates, she strives to live a peaceful life.

However in this society Gabrielle is a captured slave living a hard bitter life. All the good the Xena has done is undone, the warlords she previously had bested are still around and just as villainous.

This episode is a reworking of 'It's A Wonderful Life.' Xena is a fairly muscular village girl in a dress and trying to resist all temptations to take up arms. However Xena realises despite her bloodsoaked past, she has on balance done more good.
