This episode has most of the greatest elements that make the series so extraordinary: The subtle and layered acting of Lucy Lawless, the chemistry between Xena and Gabrielle as complete compliments to each other, their willingness to fight for the greater good even if it means their death and that implicit heroism knowing they could die, fighting against impossible odds because it is the right thing to do. Gabrielle not only supports Xena, but brings out the best in her-as a warrior and person. The tender love for each other an deeper commitment is very touching. One of the lasting visual images is of them clasping hands saying pledging "even through death".The beautifully choreographed fighting scenes in a small area are nothing less than brilliant. What is most impressive is the acting: Lucy ranges from A-Z from calm, to concerned but restrained about Gabrielle's wound, thinking strategically about their options, tender care of Gabrielle while preparing for onslaught, ferocious warrior and yet fairly letting the last soldiers leave with rapid transitions in emotion and action.Renee played a wounded Gabrielle without every invoking pity; realistic, a bit of defensive humor and a damned good job of getting close to death. To me. one of the best episodes.
