This 2 parter begins one of my favorite arcs and introduces the best villain of the series! We also learn more about Xena's past which is always a plus!

Not all episodes can be slapstick knockabouts, but that's where Xena excels.
When they try to get too serious, it can sometimes fall flat, and this one pancaked badly.
Cringe inducing cultural appropriation, a muddled plot, clumsy dialogue, ham handed spiritual wibble wobble, too many new secondary characters shoe-horned in with no chemistry, and far too much padding to fill the run time: not even the amazing Lucy Lawless could pardon this turkey.
In most episodes you get the impression that the cast and crew had a blast making it. Here, I reckon they just gritted their teeth and go through it, doubtless not helped by the dreadful weather they were plagued with during filming.
Completists will also have to do the grind, but it's not the episode to show to someone to get them hooked on Xena.
