Quotes

  • Fox Mulder : Do you have that sandwich I asked you to bring?

    Dana Scully : It's liverwurst.

Dana Scully : Mulder, you know that proper surveillance requires two pairs of agents, one pair relieving the other after 12 hours.

    Fox Mulder : Article 30, paragraph 8.7?

Dana Scully : This isn't about doing it by the book. This is about you not having slept for three days. Mulder, you're gonna get sloppy and you're gonna get hurt. It's inevitable at this point.

Fox Mulder : A request for other agents to stake out Tooms would be denied. 'Til then, we have no grounds.

Dana Scully : Well then, I'll stay here. You go home.

Fox Mulder : They're out to put an end to the X-Files, Scully. I don't know why, but any excuse will do. I don't really care about my record, but you'd be in trouble just sitting in this car. And I'd hate to see you carry an official reprimand in your career file because of me.

    Dana Scully : Fox...

Fox Mulder : [Rueful laughing]  I... I... even made my parents call me Mulder. So... Mulder.

Dana Scully : Mulder, I wouldn't put myself on the line for anybody but you.

Fox Mulder : If there's an iced tea in that bag, it could be love.

Dana Scully : Must be fate, Mulder. Root beer.

  • Scully : My instinct says that burial in cement is murder...

  • [after Skinner expresses disapproval about Mulder and Scully's unorthodox methods]

Dana Scully : Sir, the very nature of the X-Files cases often precludes orthodox investigation.

Walter Skinner : Are you suggesting the Bureau adopt different standards for you and Agent Mulder?

    Dana Scully : No, sir.

Walter Skinner : Are you suggesting that Agent Mulder obstructs you from carrying out proper procedure?

Dana Scully : No, sir. If anything, I'm suggesting that these cases be reviewed with an open mind.

Walter Skinner : Maybe your mind has become too open.

  • [Scully asks Briggs if anything about Tooms's earlier crimes felt wrong to him]

Detective Frank Briggs : There is one thing that never did sit quite right with me. When I investigated the killings in 1963, all five of the victims were found at the crime scene - all five.

Dana Scully : As with the four most recent murders.

Detective Frank Briggs : When I investigated the original Powhatan Mil killings in 1933, only four of the victims were found at the crime scene. However, there was a fifth person who was missing but never found. But this...

[He opens his old file box and lifts out a jar with a piece of a human liver]

Detective Frank Briggs : This was discovered at the Ruxton Chemical Plant while it was under construction, but it doesn't belong to any of the other victims.

Dana Scully : That doesn't prove it belonged to a person murdered by Tooms.

Detective Frank Briggs : I am positive that Tooms hid this particular victim because there was something about the body that could prove he was the killer.

Dana Scully : How do you know?

Detective Frank Briggs : A hunch. A good, old-fashioned hunch. You've got to be able to trust your instincts.

Dana Scully : And where do your instincts tell you Tooms buried the body?

Detective Frank Briggs : In the concrete where they poured the foundation of the chemical plant.

  • [at the Ruxton Chemical Plant]

Dana Scully : Ground-penetrating radar. It bounces signals off of objects or cavities.

Detective Frank Briggs : Tells you where the body is.

Dana Scully : Well, it signals if something inordinate is present. An experienced operator attempts to differentiate if the signal is a body or is stone or a hole in the ground.

    Detective Frank Briggs : Differentiate?

    Dana Scully : Mm-hmm.

Detective Frank Briggs : You mean, he guesses.

Dana Scully : Well... it's an educated guess.

    Detective Frank Briggs : Mm-hmm.

  • Dana Scully : How are we doing?

Radar Operator : Well, it's really hard to tell. There are some possibilities... very few places...

[Briggs wheels himself out of sight, entering a shadowed portion of the chemical plant. After a few moments, he senses something about the atmosphere of the room...]

Detective Frank Briggs : It's here... here!

Radar Operator : What is it?

Detective Frank Briggs : It's here!

    [points urgently at the floor]

Detective Frank Briggs : It's *right here*!
