Out With The Old

Warning: Spoilers
A rather prescient episode given that the main storyline focuses on gay marriage, or rather the banning of it. CJ is also tagged with an internet press rumour that she maybe the most powerful lesbian in the free world.

Of course the irony of this topic is that gay marriage was eventually recognised by most Western democracies within 10 years or so of the episode airing (2005)

We also learn that Congressman Santos decides to run for the next presidency, on the proviso that Josh joins him as campaign manager. And it is to this new story arc which may explain why Josh was never promoted to Chief of Staff, even though he would have been the next logical choice after Leo stepped down.

Near the end of the episode we see Bartlet on crutches trying to walk to his desk in the Oval Office. While at the same time we see Santos making his public speech declaring his intention to run for president, overseen by Josh. And also of Donna starting her job working with the Russell campaign.

This is clearly a case of "out with the old, and in with the new": Bartlet is clearly coming to the end of his administration barely able to walk; and now we're introduced to the new Turks preparing for a new administration in just over a year's time.

What it also quite interesting, is that the script was written in part by our very own Bradley Whitford (Josh)!
