Fabulous.

I know this is quite a dark show, that deals with pretty grim matter, but this episode is actually rather beautiful. Even though there's a body found in a crypt, there is a softness to this episode that's never seen on the show again. The music is gorgeous, very soft and melodic, really given it that softer feel. There's a strong sense of community, that's also something you don't see on the show again. I love the story, but I also love the characters, so many genuinely strong and memorable players, Annette Crosbie, Con O'Neill, James Hayes all great, Barry Morse was incredibly good as Father Sebastian, very memorable performance. This first series of Waking the Dead was exceptional, every episode so strong. This is a favourite.

I only wish the British would outgrow their anti-Catholic bigotry.

Typically excellent British mystery series hampered by their centuries old anti-Catholic bigotry. They simply cannot seem to do a series that does not spend an inordinate amount of time bashing religion in general, and Catholicism in particular. A sad legacy of a nation who based their break from Catholicism on the serial adultery of Henry VIII and the violent persecutions of Oliver Cromwell. This should be a reminder to all Americans of the reality that the 1st Amendment protections of religion in America were intended to protect religion from government, rather than the other way around! Our founding fathers rejected the concept by which the Church of England was the official church of the state, with the monarch as its head.
