Bailey is generally too shy to submit her aspirations to the scrutiny of co-workers but when Travis says he wants more provocative public service programming (required commercial free by the FCC for a station to maintain its broadcast license) she comes up with an idea for a noon talk-show called Cincinnati Beat.
She wants to produce it and wants Fever to be the interviewer/host. Travis likes the idea more because he is grooming Bailey for more significant responsibilities (He can't be everywhere at once) and wants her to become more confident. Fever hates talk shows and doing interviews but Travis, slipping into Machiavelli mode again gently persuades the Doctor.
Tarlek and Les think Bailey's idea is banal. Les wants to have a show where he would read local and international obituaries. An interesting idea but given its morbidity and his difficulty in pronouncing foreign names probably not a very good one.
Bailey has difficulty finding a sane guest (I guess after Scum of the Earth's visit nobody thought of interviewing young musicians) for the first broadcast until she meets with Dr.Hyman Monroe who seems like the ideal guest up until he is on the air and it is readily apparent he has as little qualification for the prefix "Doctor" as Fever does and rants and raves pretty much like Fever does every morning but not as a joke.
Tarlek, ever the "Me-firster" stung that Bailey didn't want him as the first guest on Cincinnati Beat champions Les saying he should be the one to replace Bailey who seems in over her head. Les wants to read obituaries and Tarlek wants to be the first guest? Sounds like a brilliant idea when you phrase it that way! Carlson, won over by Tarlek and Les after they have all forcibly removed wacko "Doctor" Monroe puts out the call to can Bailey up until she presents herself, owns up to her mistake and persuades the Big Guy to reconsider citing accurately (without going into specifics) that she is far from the only one at the station to have made a mistake.
Of course they can't fire Bailey (The most industrious and co-operative employee on staff) even after she has put a wackjob on the radio. Its WKRP, a station so warped that the only advertising they can get is for live-bait, suppositories and funeral homes. Dr.Monroe is actually less weird than most of their broadcast personalities.
If you wonder why the station doesn't employ a security guy you aren't alone. There constantly seem to be people who don't belong there getting in and disrupting things.
Jan Smithers as Bailey and Loni Anderson as Jennifer are one of the earliest TV "Who'd ya rathers" along with Mary-Anne & Ginger (one I could settle with a coin-flip and still be happy). Jan Smithers is the best looking woman we ever see on the show. I never found Loni Anderson attractive!
