Johnny Carson: Self - Host, Carnac the Magnificent

Quotes

  • Johnny Carson : My next guest you all know from his hit television show "Harry O". He is currently also starring in the film "Once Is Not Enough". Would you welcome, please: Mr. David Janssen!

[Janssen walks across the stage to applause, shakes hands with everyone, then sits]

    Johnny Carson : Welcome.

David Janssen : Huh? Oh yeah, hi.

Johnny Carson : You're not wiped out again? I remember last time you were here, you'd been working all day, and you were...

David Janssen : Yeah, I got up 4:30 this morning.

  • Johnny Carson : Why can't I get you on a day when you've had a decent night's sleep? You always come in here, you're half...

David Janssen : Do you do it on Sunday? I mean the show.

  • Johnny Carson : 4:30?

David Janssen : Yeah, yeah. So, I've been up, uh...

    [checks his watch]

    David Janssen : a while. That's alright; I'm awake.

  • Johnny Carson : Why do you have to get up at 4:30?

David Janssen : Uh, well, they won't pay me if I don't go to work.

Johnny Carson : Ah ha! Now the logic of it hits me.

David Janssen : But you know, in the winter time, unfortunately, the days get shorter. And when you shoot a show that's basically a location shoot, then you have fewer hours to work during the day. So that's why.

  • Johnny Carson : They do that more and more on television. In the old days, practically everything was done interiors, were they not?

David Janssen : That's right, yeah.

Johnny Carson : Most television shows now are practically all shot on location, outside of maybe scenes in a room, or something.

David Janssen : Well, it's economically more sound, too, because of the cost of building things. If you build a set, it's almost an impossibility to support, cost-wise. Or you can go out and get a diner, and you can give the guy $100 and you get the pie, it's three days old, it's already there, and the flies, everything comes free.

Johnny Carson : In other words, if you want to use somebody's house or something, you go to the owner and say, "Hey, can we rent your house for a few days?"

David Janssen : Can we destroy your house for two or three days? And you give him...

Johnny Carson : Do people generally like to have movie people or television people come in and use their home?

David Janssen : I wouldn't. I wouldn't have my crew anywhere near me... No, they're a good crew. But when you work, there's 65, 70 guys that really take over your house. Now, they're very conscientious, and they spread down baseboard and things. They clean up, and they leave the house very, very much as it was. But when you have that many people, if you care about your home, I think I would be a little traumatized by all those people in there. A lot of people like to have it - they like to have people in their home.

  • Johnny Carson : I would play Joan of Arc for a million dollars. And they could burn me at the stake.

  • Johnny Carson : Tommy Newsom wrote his annual letter to Santa Claus, uh, today; he told Santa he's been good all year and done nothing naughty, and his wife notarized it.
