The title is based on the Pulitzer Prize winning "The Subject Was Roses" by Frank D. Gilroy which opened at the Royale Theater (and four other theaters) in New York on May 25, 1964, ran for 832 performances and won the 1965 Tony Award (New York City) for the Best Play.
