Eric's Burger Job ****1/2
berringercross26 June 2010
Original Air Date: September 27th, 1998

When her parents go away for the weekend there's a party at Donna's house, but the only person she really wants to attend is stuck working late at his new job. This fifth episode of "That '70s Show" derives much of its humor from the familiarity principle: everyone's been in similar situations to what Eric Forman is going through. Let's face it, who hasn't begun their working life with a menial job such as being employed by a fast food restaurant (or a retail outlet, or a grocery store, or a video store, etc.)? It really hits home for a lot of us and that's what makes this piece so funny.

Fatso Burger in itself is another testament to that sense of familiarity with its scarily generic set design and recognizably mundane color schematic. There's even a cookie cutter employer molded out of guest star Danny Bonaduce (who found fame in the actual seventies by appearing on another popular sitcom, "The Partridge Family"). Throw in a goofy, mock informational training video, replete with grainy black-and-white, and the scenario is concluded.

Things are also coming together nicely cast-wise for this installment. Danny Masterson has started to imbue more sincere (and sincerely endearing) sarcasm into his role of Hyde while Topher Grace (as Eric) has finally found the balance between indecisive square and altruistic centerpiece. Even Ashton Kutcher has expanded his dim bulb routine for Kelso; paying particular attention to the crafting of the job interview sequence using understated gestures and vocal patterns for maximum effect. There's still room for Kurtwood Smith to steal the one liner's spotlight as well with his slaughterhouse joke near the beginning of the program (though the introduction of Wilmer Valderrama's trademark catchphrase "it gives me needs" deserves an honorable mention, too). Last but not least, this is the episode that features Donna's famous disappearing sister Tina (played by pretty jailbait Amanda Fuller), who would never be seen again in the series' run. Overall, "Eric's Burger Job" hits almost as many high notes as one chapter of a sitcom can, making it a wonderful addition to the incredible first season.

1x5: Eric's Burgers Job
FriedToast0220 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A great episode another one that touches upon real life and again teasing Eric and Donnas relationship which seemed to be a lot of early episodes.

A lot of pros to this one as well not as good as Eric's Birthday to me. But still great pretty much the whole main plot with Eric and his first job is great. The interview scene is iconic. Eric saying he's got to work all the time, which is a funny scene but also is true when you get your first job it usually starts to take over life and you work a lot. Ricky is a pretty funny character and then his reaction when Eric quits is also funny. Also kitty has a good moment when red doesn't know she did the driveway for Eric cause of work. Her reaction was great. Also her showing up to Fatso burger was a great scene. Her telling Ricky she's his mother. The other thing going on is Donna trying to get alone with Eric it doesn't sound that funny but it's got some great moments. Especially the scene in the basement Donna dropping hints to Eric and Hyde the only one picking them up and kelso and fez reaction to Donna and throwing a party. Fez prostitution line is classic. The party scene is classic with fez hitting on Donnas sister and Hyde line back at him. Red catching Hyde fez and kelso trying to steal his beer is also very funny. The scene with Eric showing up to Donnas but bob came home early was also a great scene. I just love how the show use to do real life situations and made it funny and interning later it kind of felt more like sitcom tropes, right now it feels original even if it isn't perfect.

Some of the negatives include Donnas little sister I'm not gonna talk about it to much it's her only appearance and it is weird looking back since you kind of forget and think Donnas an only child but it's not to bad unless your rewatching it, and it doesn't even bother me to much. Now this is the first episode they partially tease there could be something between Hyde and Donna that at least i noticed and idk I was never a huge fan of this plot especially since I do quite enjoy Hyde and Jackie as a couple. I'm happy that didn't last to long and was dropped this season. But the pros out weigh the cons.

Eric's Burger Job (#1.5)
ComedyFan20101 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Eric gets his first job at a burger place and doesn't have enough time for Donna and other things. Donna's parents are away and she wants Eric to come over but instead what she gets is a party.

Funny episode. I was dying when Donna was throwing hints at Eric and he didn't get them. As well as Hyde saying that he actually agrees with Jackie that Eric and Kelso are idiots. He was also great in the scene where he acts like Donna's therapist.

Another great part of the episode was the interview sequence of the guys for the burger job. And Kitty visiting Eric and deciding when his break is was again wonderful.
