Final Exam - A Safe, Unusual but Decent Start to the Show
jones-markjones-mark59217 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Now, I've never seen a single episode of Teen Titans. I'm very familiar to Batman, Superman and most other DC characters' shows, but I never watched Teen Titans when it first aired and despite the ridiculous amount of love this show gets. Since DC's Titans is coming soon and I seemingly don't hate it enough, I've decided to watch the entire Teen Titans animated series in hopes that I can compare it to the new live-action TV show coming this October. So, let's begin...

The episode plays it very safe. The Teen Titans battle two foes (Cinderblock and Plasmas) whilst trying to learn to work together. The action is actually fairly decent with each member showing off their powers and personalities. Even from the first episode, I get an idea of what each character is like. Robin is the determined leader, Raven the mysterious but powerful loner, Beast Boy the immature and excited member, Starfire the naive and (perhaps) comedic relief for older audiences and Cyborg the... mix of everything, really.

For the first episode, it's a little weird for there to be a falling-out story already. This is usually reserved mid-way through a season to establish the tension in the team. As a result, it does seem rushed and as an audience I didn't feel that tension between them that would cause Cyborg to quit. Therefore, the story felt flat for me and I just found myself more interested in the action and characters as a result.

All in all, a decent episode with a weak story but fun action and characters. It will take me a little while to get used to the style of animation and weird Anime features, but I am certainly excited to see more!
