The very last Tales from the Crypt episode & something completely different.
poolandrews13 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Tales from the Crypt: The Third Pig tells the strange story of three Pig brother's named Dudley, Smokey & Drinky. An evil killer Wolf wants to eat the three Pigs but due to their stupidity manages to kill & eat only Smokey & Drinky. Their brother Dudley is accused of the killings & is sentenced to death but with help form the ghost's of his dead brother's manages to escape & plot revenge on the big bad Wolf...

Episode 13 from season 7 The Third Pig was the final ever episode of the generally excellent Tales from the Crypt telly series which ran for 93 episode between 1989 & 1996, this one was directed by Bill Kopp & Patrick Ventura & is a totally unique episode in the series. For a start the thing that really jumps out is that it is an entirely animated episode & not live action save for the opening & closing Cryptkeeper sequences. The second thing of note is that The Third Pig is the only episode in the entire seven seasons not to be based on a story from one of the E.C. horror comic books although the 'Tales from the Crypt' comic book is still credited. With that in mind I don't quite know how to rate The Third Pig or what to make of it, it's basically a mental version of The Three Little Pigs with a bit of Frankenstein thrown in there for good measure. On a really dumb juvenile sort of level The Third Pig entertains but there's no real story here, the parodies of nursery rhymes & Frankenstein don't really come off & the violence is incredibly slapstick & silly. The script seems only intent on taking traditionally child friendly looking cartoon character's & making them behave badly like killing, smoking, drinking, being sick & lusting after women & generally against expectation for a cute looking cartoon character. At only twenty fives minutes in length at least it's short & it is sort of amusing in a strange oddball sort of way but I doubt I would ever want to watch it again & I really have no idea what the production team were thinking.

The story, if you can call it that, is told largely in rhyme with the Cryptkeeper narrating it to fill in some of the exposition. There's some violence & over-the-top gore towards some of the character's but since it's animated in such a one dimensional way it's hard to take seriously. The character design is silly & stupid & the entire episode is played for laughs, the animation looks cheap, the backgrounds are basic & static although the deliberately childish & simplistic look might have been intentional I think it looks pretty poor when compared to say Japanese Animee like Urotsukidôji I: Legend of the Overfiend (1989) or the Ninja Scroll (1993) film. The opening & closing Cryptkeeper sequences sees him looking for new writing staff which is probably an acknowledgement that the production team had used up off the available stories from the comics.

The Third Pig is a bizarre way to spend twenty five minutes & in a oddball sort of way quite fun & entertaining but I don't think I would ever want to see it again & as the last ever Tales from the Crypt episode one has to say it's a bit of a disappointment. While The Third Pig was the final Tales from the Crypt telly episode two films were made Demon Knight (1995) & Bordello of Blood (1996).

Meat on the cloven hoof

Imagine The Three Little Pigs retold as Mary Shelley's Frankentein. The final episode of TALES is a cartoon drawn in the modern, fractured style, with huge gobs of gore and violence. The big bad wolf manages to kill and consume two of the pigs, so the third decides to create a Frankenpig to seek vengeance. Nothing goes as planned, naturally. This is not a kids' cartoon, and it is worse than anything ever seen on FAMILY GUY. Bobcat Goldthwait provides the voice of the wolf. Everything is spoken in rhyme, except the wolf doesn't do too well in that area. Agsin, this is most definitely not for the kids. And most adults may need to think twice before watching this as well.

The series finale was.....a pretty strange one.
TOMNEL30 October 2007
After the 7th season being entirely filmed in England, the final episode goes back to all American...voices that is. This episode is a strange little cartoon rendition of The Three Little Pigs. Watching this, it has Ren and Stimpy like animation, and South Park-ish violence. In this version of the classic story, 2 of the pigs are brutally murdered by the wolf, and the smart pig Dudley is framed for murder. He escapes prison with the help of his brother's spirits and he builds a Frankenpig to help kill the wolf. As you can tell, this plot bounces all around from one place to another, but it isn't bad. The animation, though pretty bad, is funny and has a lot of great sight gags, and it's good the show didn't end on a normal English episode, and ended on a strange note.

My rating: *** out of ****. Contains violence and language. 25 mins.

A twisted but fun fairy tale parody

Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching regularly the Nelvana animated version of Tales from the Crypt when I was a kid, but strangely enough, I actually never saw any episode from the live-action series until now.

The Third Pig is the only animated episode from the original show, being also the series finale.

I personally liked the contrast between the zany, colorful cartoon aesthetic with all the gross and macabre elements from the plot, resulting in a very twisted but darkly entertaining fairy tale parody.

A part of me kinda wish the animated series had been like this, but I still remember it very fondly, despite its very sanitized approach.

Pork - the Other White Meat

Warning: Spoilers
Upon viewing this episode, one might say "What the heck was that?" "The Third Pig" definitely is one of the better episodes of the seventh season of Tales from the Crypt. Though animated, the episode had gore-galore! It was absolutely hilarious to see that much blood in a cartoon! One can imagine that the 'Nelvana' animation studio was overjoyed to finally be able to draw some blood, sex, and violence in their cartoons!

The story starts out like always: the three pig brothers plagued by the devious wolf. The two sloven pigs--Drinky and Smokey--come to live with their brother Dudley--the smart one--after their own homes are destroyed by the wolf (voiced by America's funny-boy, Bobcat Goldthwait!). One day, while Dudley is out buying alcohol for his brothers, the wolf finds a way in and kills the pigs. I won't go further, because I don't want to ruin any of the comedy for you, but trust me, this story should NOT disappoint!

But, before letting your children watch this episode, keep in mind that this IS a Tales from the Crypt story and contains the same amount of violence and gore as all the others!

Probably the best conclusion ever for an anthological show based on horror
bellino-angelo201418 July 2021
In the introduction of this final episode of the TALES FROM THE CRYPT the Crypt Keeper scolds a man dressed as a vampire that has only vampire stories as propositions. Before going he turns into a bat and then we are introduced to the final story: an animated retelling of THE THREE LITTLE PIGS.

There were three little pigs. Drinky (voiced by Brad Garrett) is the one who always thought about drinking and women, Smoky always thought about smoking and women too. Dudley is the practical one. When the Big Bad Wolf comes and blows away Drinky and Smoky's houses they move into Dudley's and soon the life becomes wild: partys all nights, women running around and the like. When one day Dudley goes away for buying some stuff he leaves the brothers alone. The wolf manages to enter and devours Drinky and Smoky. When Dudley returns he reports the wolf to the police but he is taken to trial with a jury of only wolves: for saving their friend they name Dudley guilty and is put in a cell. Dudley is soon visited by the ghosts of his brothers and they help escape: they go in a laboratory that was used by their father and Dudley creates a pig version of Frankestein; he will succedd, but not without its side effects...

As the final season was probably the worst thanks to the dropping of quality and the lack of new ideas (and after 7 seasons who can blame the writers?), this episode is certainly surprising. I didn't liked the ending and being the last one in the entire show, I surely expected more. However I loved the animation and soundtrack and it reminded me a lot of the many animated TV shows I used to watch as a child. Worth seeing, and great in its own right.

The very last "Tales from the Crypt" ever. That featured a wicked and twisted animation of "The three little pigs"!

Warning: Spoilers
In what would be the very final episode ever to air and made of "Tales from the Crypt" titled "The Third Pig", was certainly neat and clever. As clearly it payed homage to the series for it's animation and the style was twisted and wicked for the way the episode fashioned a classic kids tale like "The Three Little Pigs" by making it into a horror tale. The tale narrated by the crypt keeper himself and the voice of the big bad wolf was provided by comedian Bob Goldthwait it featured three pigs named Dudley, Drinky, and Smokey. As Dudley the good pig and his other two pig brothers were no good as both were big party animals and hog chasing women! After the big wolf get his fresh pig meat from Drinky and Smokey the episode takes a twist when the revenge theme is introduced as the creation of a zombie type Frankenpig monster enters to rid the wolf only this tale takes a very strange and unexpected twist at the end! Overall good way to end the series for the way the animation was twisted and it was clever to turn a child classic into a horror tale.
