Thanks for Joe Pesci, and nice to see Burt Young in a small role.
blanbrn26 October 2006
I disagree with the last poster I think this episode "Split Personality" is one of the stronger episodes of season 4. Featuring one of my favorites funny man Joe Pesci who stars as a rich con-man who wants to become richer after leaving a casino where he picked up money off a shady deal, it's off on the road to more supposed riches or maybe he should be careful of witches! So fate has a funny way to play, as the Pesci character finds two beautiful twin sisters who have inherited a fortune. So it's a plan marry both of them for the money! At first Pesci convinces both twins, he has a twin and separate marriages occur. Only his plot is seen with a clear white streak by the twins. These two strange beauties want to share him they feel only one should be split between them, hey nothing that a high powered chainsaw want do! Good episode with a killer twist, plus it was nice to see legendary character actor Burt Young who has a small cameo at first.

Split Personality
a_baron23 August 2015
This one is strictly for laughs, surreal comedy. Jack is a small time con man with a quick tongue and an even quicker brain. We see him first pulling an improbable scam on a hapless gambler in a casino. His lucky number is 2, he says, but this time it is not so lucky.

Driving some place, he gets a flat tyre and in search of a phone, walks up to a truly spectacular futuristic mansion inhabited by two gorgeous twins played by the Citron sisters. Extremely rich, inheriting their wealth from their late father, they are totally inseparable. On account of his lucky number as much as lust, he has always wanted to bed twins, but why not go one better and marry them both? So he invents a twin brother and does just that. The twins may be gorgeous, but they have a dark secret which Jack is about to find out to his cost. It's an old story of course, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is, doubly so in this case.

"Etchison Dobbs Blair... What a goofy-looking f*ck he was!" Warning: Spoilers
Ha! Classic Pesci! I personally don't normally go for Joe Pesci's swearing angry little Italian man routine, but I really like him in this as a smarmy scheming con man out to get a double-big score. He's really funny and puts a lot of sleazy charm into the role, and he also goes quite flamboyant with it at points, he sings a lot! In fact what's possibly the most outlandish and disturbing sight in the entire run of the series may be the spectacle of Pesci as he does a little jig and sings a little of Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy!" Really! It was cool to see Joe Pantaloni in the show again in the brief cameo as a card dealer who's in cahoots with Pesci's character to scam poor saps like Burt Young out of what little money they have. Good solid performances from the enchantingly spooky Jacqueline and Kristen Citron as April and June Blair, twin terrors who make Pesci exactly half the man he used to be! I always liked when the show made what was basically regular humans seem like monsters in some way, and they do make them look very ghoulish with an unnaturally pale skin tone and neglected yellow teeth, it's pretty obvious that there's something suspicious and 'not all there' about them as soon as you see how they look and interact with each other. There's something seriously weird about them that goes a little further than the way in which all twins are a little odd. They're sinister and a lot of fun and my favourite thing about the tale is them and their creepy art deco mansion and fashion sense and the dark mystery of their famous architect father's death, which they eventually reveal was their doing because they were unable to 'share' him, despite how he went to the pains of constructing a bizarre home built specifically to suit their twisted intertwined personalities... You do sometimes hear of real life sad stories of extreme twins who can only ever live through each other, and who live their whole lives doing everything like a disturbing living mirror... Anyway the story has a really great ending where April and June have a very unhealthy reaction when they finally discover that "Vic" has been playing them both for saps with a rather improbable scheme of pretending to be twin brothers himself by wooing and appearing to each of them at different times(of course!) in different disguises in order to obtain their vast fortune, and they punish him by tying him down and chainsawing him in half, starting right through the crotch! It's kinda played for laughs, but it's still very wince-inducing and deliriously brutal. You've gotta love the horrific endings of Tales From the Crypt, what a legendary show! You really don't feel too bad for the guy because he's anything but a sympathetic character. And he was really dumb too, if he hadn't have been so careless with his hairpiece and the untanned stripe on his back then he could've landed that fortune! I really don't like the closing image of the girls lying opposite each other in adjoining rooms , cuddling up to the perfectly bisected halves of Vic's corpse. It's gruesome and all, but it doesn't work right, they're lying next to the wrong side, it looks stupid. I think this is a very good episode, they make great use of the twin angle and it's a very intriguing story, but if you're not somebody who enjoys a little macabre schlock and a tongue-in-cheek dark comedy tone, I don't think this'll be the episode for you. No classic, but a good story, like it a lot. Later!

Pretty weak episode
Coventry21 March 2006
There are quite a lot of prominent names involved in this little Tales f/t Crypt episode, yet that doesn't automatically means it's one of the better installments in the series. Apart from the obvious starring of Joe Pesci ("Raging Bull", "Casino"), this episode was directed by the famous producer Joel Silver, penned down by Fred Dekker ("Night of the Creeps", "Robocop 3") and shot by Jan De Bont ("Speed", "The Haunting"). Good names! Great names even, and yet this is a totally uninspired and déjà-vu story. Understandable, because the HBO-series went downhill fast near the end of the fourth season, as all the morbid story lines and original plot-twists were used already. Pesci stars as a typical small time Hollywood crook who plans to get rich very fast by seducing the twin-daughters of a legendary architect. In order to get his hands on the entire fortune, he has to marry both girls so he pretends to have a twin brother himself with the lame excuse of traveling back and forth between South Africa. The girls are pretty deranged themselves, so when they found out Jack has been fooling them all this time, they plot a bloody vengeance. Joe Pesci is great as usual in his familiar role of sneaky bastard and the fairly unknown Citron-twins (Jacqueline and Kristen) are good too. The one and only gore-sequence of the whole episode (with a chainsaw!) is satisfying.

One of my favs

Maybe it's just because I'm a big fan of Joe Pesci but this is one of my favorite episodes of TFTC. There's a lightness to it that keeps the action flowing at a pretty fast pace. No dark and stormy night, this all takes place in the bright day but it still manages to deliver a classic grotesque style ending.

Great funny episode with a nice performance by Joe Pesci
bellino-angelo201427 June 2021
This is among the most famous episodes of the show mostly because it stars Joe Pesci (who back in those years was everywhere with movies such as the HOME ALONE and LETHAL WEAPON franchises, GOODFELLAS and RAGING BULL) and I think it's among the many good episodes of the entire series.

Gambler Vic Stetson has an encounter in a gambling hall with an old pal (Burt Young in a small cameo) and then he goes home to his date. The day after he goes out and about with his car in the woods and thanks to two black cats crossing the street he has a freak accident and his tires blow. When he sees a huge mansion he goes inside for using the telephone and there he meets twins April and June Blair. After accepting to work for them he gradually falls in love with them and has an idea: create a fake identity for a fake twin brother named Jack. Things work up until April finds the fake ponytail Vic used for its Jack identity while ''Jack'' was supposed to be in Africa for business reasons. As Vic is reading the newspapers in the drawers about the twins' stories they tie him to the bed and you can guess where this is going...

Excluding the gory scene at the end where Vic is chopped in half, it's a great episode with lots of funny moments and Pesci that must have had the time of his life. In the casino scene there is even Joe Pantoliano as the owner (and he already guest starred in the first season episode DIG THAT CAT IT'S REALLY GONE). Not to be missed if you are into the show.

Decent tale from the crypt.
poolandrews19 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Tales from the Crypt: Split Personality starts as gambler Vic (Joe Pesci) has a car accident & makes his way to the nearest house to make a phone call, inside he meets two filthy rich beautiful young single twins named April & June (Jacqueline Alexandra Citron & Kristen Amber Citron) & since the number two happens to be his lucky number Vic spies an opportunity. After some lies & a lot of running around Vic invents his twin brother Jack so he can marry both twins & get the money as they share everything 50/50, however things just aren't that simple...

This Tales from the Crypt story was episode 11 from season 4, directed by one of the show's regular executive producers & mega-budget Hollywood film producer Joel Silver this is an OK tale from the crypt but nothing overly special. The script by Fred Dekker was based on a story from 'The Vault of Horror' comic book & is more of a twisted thriller with a gory climax rather than straight ahead horror or suspense. Most of the build up in this episode feels a bit dull, not much really happens & the bloody ending although satisfying enough is somewhat predictable. The main reason why Split Personality is worth watching is for the flamboyant character of Vic & Pesci's performance to go with it. I wouldn't call it an out-and-out bad story but there are better Tales from the Crypt, the Crypt Keeper (John Kassir) gets to make bad puns about gambling in his segments as well as play around with a ripped out heart.

The production design here is very good & the twin's house is pretty damn nice. There's no gore until the end when the twin's break out a chainsaw & the Split Personality title comes into it's own... The acting is good, the two twin's are attractive enough & Pesci is great as the conman who gets his just deserts.

Split Personality is a decent enough tale from the crypt that's worth a watch if you've got 30 odd minutes to spare.

Fun comic episode
Woodyanders2 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Shifty no-count con man Vic (Joe Pesci in fine and funny slimy form) tries to swindle beautiful rich twins April (the lovely Jacqueline Alexandra Cole) and June (the equally ravishing Kristen Amber Citron) out of their considerable fortune by marrying both of them and masquerading as his own fictitious twin Jack. Director Joel Silver relates the enjoyable story at a quick pace and maintains an entertaining tongue-in-cheek tone throughout. Fred Dekker's witty script has a ball with the twin premise: the gals dress the same, own the same exact cars, and even occasionally speak in unison. Burt Young has a neat minor role as a hapless gambler and Joe Pantoliano pops up in an uncredited bit as a crooked blackjack casino dealer. As a tasty added plus, the foxy Heidi Thomas shows a little skin as a jaded prostitute. Jan de Bont's glossy cinematography makes cool use of snazzy wipes and gives this episode an attractive bright look. Michael Kamen's jazzy score hits the right-on swinging spot. The gruesome conclusion with sleazeball Vic receiving his just nasty deserts is very satisfying. A total hoot.
