A fun if light weight episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Tales from the Crypt: Revenge Is the Nuts is set in a state funded institution for the blind & starts as blind teenager Sheila (Teri Polo) first arrives after having been placed there by social services. Sheila meets up with Mr. Grunwald (Anthony Zerbe) the sadistic owner who runs the place, amongst other things he deliberately leaves marbles on the floor so the blind folks will fall over, he bricks the toilet door up (!) & keeps the heating turned right down to save money. Appalled at what she learns is going on Sheila rallies the other blind folks together to teach Mr. Grunwald a lesson that he will never forget...

This Tales from the Crypt story was episode 5 from season 6, directed by Jonas McCord this is a good fun episode although a little straight forward. The script by Shel Willens was based on a story from 'The Vault of Horror' comic book which was also adapted as one of the five stories for the British made anthology film Tales from the Crypt (1972) in which it was called Blind Alleys (a much better title than Revenge Is the Nuts, don't you think?) & the two are actually very similar with the sadistic & cruel owner & operator of a home for the blind having the tables turned in a gruesome & horrific way involving a vicious dog & a slim corridor full of razor blades. While there's nothing really surprising or even that clever about Revenge Is the Nuts, it's just a simple 'just desserts' story after all, it does entertain & provide a bit of ghoulish fun if your in the right mood or like this sort of thing which I generally do.

This one is well shot with nice cinematography, there's a nice blue tone running through the episode. The annoying thing about a lot of these Tales from the Crypt episodes that are shown on telly is that you never know if they have been cut or not, here in Revenge Is the Nuts the screen fades to black very quickly at the end just as the dog is about attack Grunwald in the corridor of razors & since the show has been very gory in the past I just wonder if the version I saw was cut because otherwise there's no blood or gore here. There's a nice horror film atmosphere during this episode although they might have used the corridor of razors to better effect, musician Isaac Hayes appears as a foul mouthed resident & veteran actor Anthony Zerbe makes for a suitably slimy villain while the Cryptkeeper dresses as a French mime artist at the start for his opening scene.

Revenge Is the Nuts is a good solid Tales from the Crypt episode that I enjoyed, it's maybe not quite as good as the equivalent British 1970's Tales from the Crypt film adaptation of the same story but it's still well worth a watch.

Revenge Is the Nuts

Warning: Spoilers
Much like a lot of the later season Tales episodes, there is no real story here, there is just the idea of revenge against an evil villain.

That is not enough to tell the story. There was not even a real ending as we don't know what happened to these blind people after they presumably got out.

Same type of plot but still great
bellino-angelo201410 July 2021
The story is set in an institute for the blind and it begins with the owner's brother that throws some marbles on the floor and a black man named Samuel (Isaac Hayes) stops as he is afraid to step on the marbles. Soon arrives teenager Sheila (Teri Polo) as she is forced to stay there by social services. The institute's sadistic owner Mr. Grunwald (Anthony Zerbe) is much like Warden Drumgoole from LOCK UP: he throws marbles on the floor so that folks will slip on them, bricks the toilet door up, puts razor blades on the walls' crevices and keeps the heating system turned off. After Sheila finds out all this she rallies all the other blind folks and Grunwald's brother Benny for teaching Mr. Grunwald the lesson he'll NEVER forget!

While the subject of revenge has already been treated at least 5-6 times in the entire show (such as in FITTING PUNISHMENT, ABRA CADAVER, FOOD FOR THOUGHT and COLLECTION COMPLETED for naming a few) this didn't annoyed me as it was put in a new setting as always. What can I say? Another winner in a great season.

"Revenge is Nuts" falls short of "Blind Alleys"
scotttilmont2 March 2011
This is a remake from the original "Blind Alleys" segment of the movie "Tales from the Crypt." Though the story line is similar, it lacks the nature of realism that the original does. There are sexual overtures that weren't needed or even present in the first, but it must be for the audiences of the 1990's. "Blind Alleys" was about a home for blind men only. The leading actress had clothes that suggested the 1990's, and the whole scenario would not have played out during that time. The entire layout of the facility was unrealistic; from the size of the place and the only exit being through Grunwald's office. And to have four residents in a home for the blind, when the original had many makes it seem like there weren't have enough funds for the casting of the remake.

Warning: Spoilers
I first saw this on Foxtel at a very young age, it has to be one of my favorite Crypt episodes.... If you like it when the bad guy gets whats coming to him, than this is an episode for you I love it and often recommend my friends to watch this show, i also enjoy the fact that people can overcome small disadvantages and work together to overcome evil ;) I wish they bring out another movie length feature of this, and possibly -All through the house- Season 1 episode 2. i would also like to see a HD version available for purchase dons't have to be 1080p but it would be nice for them to release a better quality box-set rather than the DVD.

Fun episode

Warning: Spoilers
The grossly mistreated residents at a shelter for the blind band together to turn the tables on their cruel and slimy overseer Arnie Grunwald (veteran character actor Anthony Zerbe in peak nasty form). Director Jonas McCord, working from a compact script by Shel Willens, relates the entertaining story at a brisk pace, makes good use of the dingy setting, further tarts things up with a nice sense of sharp sarcastic humor, and ably crafts a dandy climax with Grunwald receiving his brutal just desserts. Moreover, the lively cast bring real zest to their roles: Attractive Teri Polo as sassy, sexy, and spirited young blonde new resident Sheila, John Savage as Grunwald's meek handyman brother Benny, Bibi Besch as the weary Armelia, Isaac Hayes as the feisty Samuel, and Tim Sampson as the browbeaten Osgood. However, it's Zerbe who owns this particular episode; he positively oozes in a choice hateful and sleazy heavy part. Rick Bota's slick cinematography provides a pleasing polished look. Ulrich Sinn's spare shivery score likewise hits the spot without ever becoming too obtrusive or overbearing. An enjoyable show.
