The exterior shots of the base are images of an actual research base in Antarctica, called the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station which is operated by the National Science Foundation. Many different types of scientific research programs are located here including programs focusing on glaciology, geophysics, meteorology, upper atmosphere physics, astronomy, astrophysics, and biomedical studies. Since 2005 the largest research program at the base is the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, which is one of the very few places on Earth where stellar neutrinos can be detected. The base is located directly over the terrestrial South Pole, the original base was built in 1957 by the U.S. Navy engineering corps. The large geodesic dome seen in the exterior shots was built in 1975 and housed many smaller structures, the purpose of the dome being to protect the residents and equipment from the extreme cold and high winds, as temperatures at the South Pole can reach as low as -130 °F (-90 °C). However, the frequent strong winds started burying the dome in snow and ice so it was dismantled in 2010 and replaced with buildings elevated above the ground on steel beams, allowing snow drifts to pass under the buildings.
The Antarctic base sign says "Welcome to White Rock Research Station". White Rock is a city near Vancouver, British Columbia where the show's filming was based.
Major Carter states that she hopes Dr. Woods activated his EPIRB. This stands for Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, the EPIRB is a small radio transmitter often carried by boats and ships, or anyone in a remote area that doesn't have access to standard emergency services. The EPIRB sends out a radio signal at 406 MHz, this frequency is monitored by a number of satellites operated by different rescue services around the world and can be used by rescue personnel to triangulate the beacon's position.
At 3 minutes 24 seconds, a pineapple can be seen on a diesel fuel barrel
Throughout this episode on the streamed formats, the name and logo on the fleeces and jackets of all 7 people on the base are often blurry, but it is sometimes shown clearly to be the name and logo of "the north face". There are points where it can be clearly seen. This may be a stipulation of their product placement contract, as in syndicated broadcasts the logo can clearly, and intentionally, be seen multiple times.
