Q confirms that the Romulan Star Empire once had, and may still have, an Empress.
The outdoor scenes were shot in Los Angeles' Griffith Park.
The title uses the American Civil War theme and plays upon the color of the North and South's uniforms, Blue and Grey. The title is also a reference to the Civil War poem "The Blue and the Gray" by Francis Miles Finch (1827-1907) and several television programs and movies with the same title.
The puppy Q is holding is quite sleepy, and clearly nodding off in his arms. The cast & crew found the puppy adorable and spent most of the day playing with it, to the point that when the scene was shot, the puppy was exhausted & struggling to stay awake while on camera.
Kate Mulgrew said the opening scene with Q was one of her personal favorites of the series, but admitted that between John de Lancie's over the top acting and the décor, she had some difficulty keeping her composure during the scene.
