B'Elanna plans a Holodeck holiday for her and Tom on Giedi Prime. This is the Harkonnen home world in the Dune series of novels by Frank Herbert. Giedi is here described is a lush paradise above and beyond even that of Risa, the pleasure planet often seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), which is ironic, since Herbert describes Giedi Prime as a polluted industrial wasteland.
One of the racers is from the planet "Imhotep," an ancient Egyptian aristocratic name, also used for the main bad guy in several horror movies about mummies.
Starfleet racing flight suits are seen for the first and only time. Consisting of sleek, tight-fitting jumpsuits, the flight suits were black and gray with white shoulders and red trim. The uniforms featured high collars and distinctive closures running down the front.
Cyia Batten (Irina), Brian George (O'Zaal), and Patrick Kilpatrick (Assan) have all appeared on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993). They played Tora Ziyal, Richard Bashir, and Reese, respectively.
One of the ships seen was a re-use of the coaxial warp ship seen in "Vis à Vis". This design was seen again in the season six episode "The Voyager Conspiracy" and the season seven episodes "Workforce" and "Workforce, Part II".
