This is the only episode of either Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) or Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) in which Keiko O'Brien (Rosalind Chao) appears but her husband Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) does not.
The concept of telepathic rape is seen again in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) with Counselor Troi once again the target. She refers to the experience as a "violation".
While Riker keeps the comatose Troi company, he mentions that she had done this for him before, referring to the events of Shades of Gray (1989).

The writing staff created memory flashbacks for every major character before Riker, Troi and Beverly were chosen. One involved Ensign Ro's actions resulting in a court-martial. Another was La Forge's traumatic childhood memory of being caught in a fire, which was used in the previous installment Hero Worship (1992) instead.
