The turbo-lift scene with Riker and young Jean-Luc was added because the show was running short and was written only the night before it was to be shot.
Originally, Data was going to be the Chief Science Officer on the Enterprise for Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), like Spock was on the original Star Trek (1966), and wear a blue uniform. However, the color blue clashed with the android make-up and the idea was changed. Data was reassigned as the Chief Operations Officer and sported a gold uniform for all seven seasons (except "Future Imperfect" and Chain of Command, Part II (1992) which depict Data as the first officer).
This the first time since Encounter at Farpoint (1987) (where she wore the "miniskirt" uniform) that Counselor Troi is seen wearing a standard Starfleet uniform. The rest of the time up to this point, she wears either a gray bodysuit or a blue dress. Troi would not don the standard uniform again until Season 6's Chain of Command, Part I (1992).
Pips apparently have disappeared 16 years in the future, and changed to bars on the communicator. Captain Riker has 4 gold bars representing captain, 3 gold bars and 1 dark bar representing a commander.
