All of the crying and vocalizations for the baby character "Yoshi" was actually the voice of lead dialogue editor Ashley Harvey's 18 month old daughter (also named Ashley), recorded and cut by him for this episode. Asked what he did to get her to scream and cry so loudly and horribly, his answer was: "She crys after her nap to let us know she is ready to get up. I just didn't go get her right away - and she was not amused."
During the filming of the picnic scene the crew saw a rattlesnake moving toward the actors who were unaware. The crew didn't want to alarm the actors (which included two children) so they weren't told immediately. When "cut" was called they very calmly asked all the cast to walk slowly towards him, which they did. The snake then proceeded through the shot, closely followed by a park ranger.
The idea behind this episode was originally developed for Firstborn (1994) where it revolved around Worf's son Alexander.
Chief O'Brien uses the expletive "Bollocks" at one point. This word is commonly used in Ireland and sometimes in Britain and it is the only time it has been used in any Star Trek series. When aired in Ireland and the United Kingdom during the daytime, the word was edited out. United States broadcasts were untouched, as it is not considered a swear word there, and is meaningless to Americans.
All of the exteriors for this episode were shot in Malibu Creek State Park.
