Very funny Ferengi episode
Tweekums6 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Quark's mother has been captured by the Dominion and he has to assemble a team to rescue her. Does he recruit Klingons? Does he recruit Nausicaan mercenaries? No, he recruits an unlikely group of Ferengis including Rom, Nog, Ex-liquidator Brunt, his cousin Gaila the arms dealer and Leck who isn't interested in money but likes a challenge especially if he gets to kill somebody. After practicing in the holosuite it is clear that they can't beat the Jem'Hadar in combat; they'll just have to do things the Ferengi way; arrange a deal. The arrange to swap captured Vorta Keevan and head to Empok Nor to make the trade. When the Jem'Hadar arrive there are rather more of them than the Ferengis can deal with… they certainly have to hope the Dominion will stick to the arranged deal. It looks like they will… until Rom lets slip that the reward the Negus offered for return of his beloved Ishka was more than twice what Quark had told them. Unimpressed Gaila tries to shoot Quark but kills the Vorta by mistake. They must come up with something quickly if they are to get out of there alive!

As with most Ferengi led episodes this was more humorous than the average episode. It was amusing watching them run around hopelessly, especially when they thought their prisoner had escaped. I thought Christopher Shea was great as Keevan the deadpan Vorta. The solution they came up with after he was killed was hilarious, although I won't spoil it here.

The not-so-Magnificent Six
planktonrules18 January 2015
Throughout the run of "Star Trek: Deep Space 9", the Ferengi were used intermittently as comic relief. In other words, after a few cerebral or galaxy-changing shows, they often tossed in a funny Ferengi one. Now that I am re-watching the series, I have really come to appreciate these Ferengi episodes.

The title of this show is a variation on the movie title "The Magnificent Six" and the idea is strongly inspired by movies like this. It seems that somehow Moogie (Quark and Rom's mother) has been taken prisoner by the Dominion. Why? Who knows. Regardless, the guys are so upset about this that they've decided to mount a rescue mission--something that seems completely ridiculous since the Jem'Hadar are the universe's best fighters and the Ferengi...well...aren't. Can a team of six Ferengi misfits have a chance at all to not only save Moogie but their sorry butts?

This one is about what you'd expect from such a show. It's not the least bit serious and has a few nice laughs--particularly at the end. Overall, like most of the Ferengi shows, it's fun and enjoyable throughout.

Good Fun with the Keystone Ferengi
Hitchcoc3 November 2018
I wonder if someone gave a moment's thought to a spinoff. With this cast of crazy money grubbers, each with a unique personality, it may have worked, especially with a juvenile audience. Quark's mother is taken prisoner by the Dominion and he and Rom come up with a plot to rescue her, employing friends and relatives. Of course, the whole thing is ludicrous, but as a stand alone, it works pretty well.

Brilliant

People will claim this episode is stupid and totally out of place in DS9, I don't care, it is an immensely fun episode. I love the fact that it is a parody of 'The Magnificent Seven' Western movie and it is a great adaption of the original. Every series can benefit from the odd comedic episode, and this is a great example.

Marvelous fun!

Star Trek has always had a keen eye for humor. Think of the Tribbles! This spoof on the Magnificent Seven is fun, and I love spunky Moogie, talking up investment portfolios and skin cream with her captor. DS9 also does so much to create more depth with various cultures, so yes, what WOULD happen if six Ferengi went on a rescue mission? Have a blast....watch!

Most fun I've had with DS9!

This episode was so much fun! The Ferengi, in particular Quark, have always amused me, but this one lets their greedy little light shine!! This is also the only episode of any show that I've ever given a review on. That should tell you how much I enjoyed watching this.

A delightful episode I enjoyed immensely.

Warning: Spoilers
**Does contain the odd spoiler**.

If people thought the previous episode about the genetically engineered misfits was an off-beat episode this one most certainly was. By far the most humorous DS9 episode I have watched up to yet. It just kept getting dafter & dafter, like two lots of the 3 stooges cavorting around the place. The thing was, best to suspend taking this particular episode seriously. Certainly not as seriously as almost any other previous DS9 episode.

I kept laughing time & time again. Just shows what a good actor Quark was, I consider him to be in the top 3 actors of the entire series. He mainly played it straight, with the seriousness of wanting to make profit, it gave it an air of credibility & direction whilst it was effectively comical slapstick with phaser's, on a space station.

Fair play to the writers creating this episode and of cause the actors playing all the characters, especially the Ferengi ones, they even roped in Iggy Pop, maybe a long time Star Trek fan to add to it. To the odd-ballness of it all.

Yes I liked this episode a lot, the one previous was enjoyable as well, quite intriguing after a while when the plot started developing. It was sort of a spring board of off-beatness leading on to this Ferengi episode. Tapering up from the usual near levelness of episodes prior to this episode and the previous one. So a well organised positioning of episodes.

THOUGH there was soon another Quark themed episode about the mourning of Morn. (I thought it was directly after it, seemed it). Maybe best not to have two successive or near successive episodes about the one main prominent character, mix them up a bit, it works better. Too many Sisko episodes back to back became stale, there are many interesting characters to choose from, mainly they were mixed up for variety.

Many episodes are worthy of 9 stars, though I usually find something objectionable about them that marks them down.

Eg, in the previous "Statistical Probabilities" episode, when the weird guy threatened to snap the girls neck, with his hands actually upon her, Bashir would have had him locked up straight away. Such a threat as that would have been dealt with, not passed over. So as intriguing & entertaining as that episode developed into, I liked the plot of that one, there was a fly in the ointment to slightly spoil it for me.

This Ferengi one developed into a real good laugh and I really can't find fault in it. Nor would I want to, at times it was very funny in the sheer preposterousness of it all. A right old caper. Well worth 9 stars.

Weekend at Keevan's
snoozejonc19 April 2023
Quark organises a rescue mission to save his mother.

This is a fun comedy episode with good character moments.

The plot has quite outrageous humour and works well depending on how funny you find certain concepts. I was consistently smiling and occasionally chuckling to myself. Easily the biggest laugh from me came from seeing Iggy Pop playing a Star Trek alien, which think was a bizarre yet inspired idea.

I like the Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven tributes and all characters are mixed well. The contrast between how Keevan is used in this story compared to his very serious introduction in the episode 'Rocks and Shoals' could not be bigger.

It is led very well by Armin Shimerman, but Max Grodènchik, Aaron Eisenberg, Jeff Combs, Josh Pais, Hamilton Camp, and Cecily Adams all make great contributions.

Credit to the makeup department given that so many Ferengi and Vorta characters appear on screen.

For me it's a 7.5/10, but I round upwards.

Quark is one of the best characters on the show
bbraat18 December 2022
From a cast of mediocre and cliched characters, Quark has always stood out.

When the Ferengi were introduced on TNG in the first season, they were described as being as powerful as the Federation with starships as powerful as the Enterprise. This would further suggest that they were as powerful as the Romulans or the Klingons or the Cardassians.

Since that introduction however they are now portrayed as a bunch of incompetent misers working as waiters in a Federation space station.

How did these nincompoops manage to create a galactic empire alongside the Romulans, Federation, Klingons, or Cardaddians?
