Not exactly Moogie
planktonrules18 January 2015
Occasionally, "Star Trek: Deep Space 9" recurring characters were played by different actors--especially if this difference could be hidden. Leyta and Quark and Rom's Moogie are two such examples of characters with multiple actors. Here, Moogie is no longer played by Andrea Martin but another actress but her strange and feisty ways continue.

When the show begins, Quark has word that his mother is keeping a decidedly high profile for a Ferengi woman (what else is new?!). What's she up to? She's the new girl friend of the Grand Nagus (Wallace Shawn) and Quark doesn't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. It doesn't really matter, though, as she won't do what he says! As for Rom, he's more concerned with Lita these days and soon you could see Rom and Moogie married (but, thank God, not to each other).

This is a fun little Ferengi episode--as are most of the Frenggi episodes. Worth seeing and silly.

Moogie's Back and How Quark Got His Aquiring Groove Back...
nbrettel30 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The episode begins with an uncharacteristically depressed Quark moping about the string of misfortunes he has encountered. Nothing can cheer him up - even his brother, Rom's engagement to Bajoran dabo girl Leeta fails to perk him up. Fortunately, Rom knows someone that might help Quark get out of his funk - their fiesty, eccentric but loving mother, Ishka!

Moogie welcomes Quark with open (albeit worried) arms. Quark soon realizes the source of Ishka's anxiety - Grand Nagus Zek is secretly staying in their house too (and hiding in Quark's closet, no less) and she are Zek are secret lovers. At first shocked by this development, Quark is happy for his moogie - as she is now the lady love of the Ferengi he aspires to be. Quark sees this as an opportunity to butter up the Nagus to renew his business license. Unfortunately, Zek doesn't take the bait and tells Quark that it is up to the FCA, the ones responsible for revoking his license. Once again depressed, Quark gets an unexpected visit for his old enemy - Liquidator Brunt (the very ferengi who revoked his business license). Brunt finds Zek's secret love affair with Ishka disgraceful and offers to restore Quark's license if he breaks up his mother and the Nagus. Quark takes the bait and goes out of his devious Ferengi way by manipulating the Nagus with trumped-up rumors about his mother and pretends to be suicidal in front of Ishka so she take pity on him and try to convince the Nagus to vouch on his behalf - only for her to be cruelly rejected by the Nagus. Ishka is brokenhearted, and Brunt renews Quark's business license. Quark is secretly pleased with himself - up until he realizes that the Nagus is losing his memory, a fact he discovers after the latter promotes him as the Nagus's First Clerk. Quark is abashed to discover that his Moogie was more than Zek's lover - she was his secret fianancial advisor and that his actions in ruining their relationship has caused a bigger problem - by inadvertently exposing the Nagus's failing memory and destroying the Ferengi economy. What's worse is that Brunt knew of the Nagus's weakness and had used Quark as a pawn to expose the Nagus and have him crowned the new Nagus! Meanwhile, A ferengi tradition causes friction in Rom and Leeta's engagement. Rom eventually discovers that his love for Leeta is more important to him than tradition.

This episode is funny, heartfelt and peppered with witty gags and great romantic comedy elements. The two love stories involving the two couples; Ishka and Grand Nagus Zek, and Rom and Leeta were very interesting and full of depth. Quark's character development has come a long way from resenting his mother in "Family Business" ( He even calls her "Moogie" a lot) and we actually get to see him work with his mother by passing on advice to the Nagus during an inquiry. Even though Andrea Martin's performance as Moogie was great, The late great Cicely Adams was incredibly fun as Quark's fiesty but well-meaning mother and her scenes with Quark were cute and hilarious at the same time.

Quark and Rom have problems
Tweekums15 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Things are looking good for Rom when this episode opens, he announces that he is going to get married to the beautiful Leeta. Things aren't so good for his brother however; he is depressed about being blacklisted by the FCA and his bar is infested with voles. He decides he needs to find comfort with the one person who can cheer him up; his mother. When he gets back to Ferenginar he has a shock when he learns that he mother is involved with the Grand Nagus. Brunt tells Quark he can have a new trading licence if he arranges for his mother and the Negus from seeing each other. This he quickly does only to find that his mother was responsible for most of the Nagus's financial decisions and now Brunt will be able to usurp the Nagus's position unless he can get his mother to advise him again. Back on DS9 Rom has agreed to a traditional Bajoran wedding but when people say ask if they will be doing anything Ferengi he decides to ask her to sign a Ferengi prenuptial agreement, she refuses and it looks as if their relationship is over unless Rom can think of a solution.

As with most Ferengi led episode this had a few good laughs, the best being how Quark kept finding people in his closet. The romance between the Nagus and Quark's mother isn't one of the best stories in the series but it was good to see Rom and Leeta work things out as they are a good couple.

Worth watching for character continuity (Quark)
snoozejonc6 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Quark gets involved in his mother's personal life.

I think this is a fairly mediocre episode.

The concept of female rights within Ferengi culture had a lot of potential, but I don't find this story interesting, nor think it does much to develop the character of Ishka. I appreciate it's not meant to be taken seriously, but for me the humour is moderately funny at best. The scenes involving Zek and Ishka are mostly annoying.

After overcoming big moral dilemma in the episode 'Business As Usual' it feels like a step back for Quark to get suckered into this scheme that involves selling out his own mother. Plus the resolution to his on going arc involving the business licence is hit with a convenient reset button.

I struggle to take anything from the B-plot involving Rom and Leeta's prenuptial agreement. It feels similar to the previous episode 'Dr Bashir, I Presume' in it's farcical nature regarding these two characters.

It's a difficult one to rate because there is nothing obviously bad in the writing or general production. It just feels a bit uninspired. To be fair to the actors they do decent work with the material, especially Armin Shimerman.

Too Much Ferengi
Hitchcoc31 October 2018
I debated watching this after reading the plot blurb. I'm at a point where I don't really want interruptions from the significant stuff. Once again Quark finds himself in financial trouble since his license was taken away. Rom convinces him to their mother and he ends up in a whirlwind of goofiness, dealing with the Nagus. There are a couple funny things here, but had I not been true to the series, I would have skipped this one.
