- A group of aliens who exist in a state of incredible acceleration invade the Enterprise and abduct Capt. Kirk.
- The Enterprise responds to a distress call from the planet Scalos, but when Kirk and a landing party beam down to the planet they find no living beings. It turns out that the Scalosians live at a much higher rate of acceleration, rendering them invisible to the human eye. One of the Scalosians, the beautiful and seductive Deela, accelerates Kirk so they can interact, where she tells him he cannot return to his normal life. For the crew, Kirk has virtually disappeared before their eyes. The Scalosians want to turn the Enterprise into a cryogenic storage facility for the crew. Kirk learns that at his current state of acceleration, they are subject to cellular degeneration and rapid aging should they suffer the slightest cut. He leaves a message for the crew but it is left to Mr. Spock to find a way to decipher it.—garykmcd
- In answering a distress call, the crew of the Enterprise encounters an accelerated race on the planet Scalos, a mere handful of humanoids moving so rapidly as to be visually undetectable, leaving only a buzzing noise about them. Captain Kirk and Crewman Compton are the first of what are to be many fertile men brought up to the Scalosian's pace so that they may be used as breeding stock to perpetuate the Scalosian race, but accelerated living comes at a price. Not only does "burn out" occur for those the Scalosians take, cellular damage from even a scratch can infect rapidly and cause almost instantaneous death. Deela, the queen, has eyes for Kirk, but her enjoyment of the captain sparks jealousy in Commander Rael, Deela's soul-mate, who thereafter looks to "cut" the captain from their program while working to turn the Enterprise into one big cryogenics chamber for future breeding partners.—statmanjeff
- The Enterprise is called to an advanced planet to help with an emergency. Beaming down though, they can find no people, only their cities. Suddenly, one of the away team seems to disappear from Dr. McCoy's sight. After the away team beams back up, a series of strange things begin to occur. One such thing is the appearance of an alien device installed to the life support machinery, which can't be removed because it's protected by a powerful force field. Going back up to the bridge, Capt. Kirk notices everyone on the bridge is slowing down to a near-stop. He's been hyper-accelerated in time so that he moves at super-speed compared to the crew. He then meets the aliens they beamed down to help: the Scalosians. They've been stuck in hyper-acceleration since radiation poisoned their planet's water supply. Their men are also sterile, so they must lure space vessels to recruit males for reproductive purposes. Kirk finds his missing crewman, who seems to relish his new life and has helped the Scalosians install their device to the life support, which will freeze the crew so that there will be a fresh supply of fertile males for generations. But a simple injury inflicted by a Scalosian man causes the crewman's body to age to death in mere minutes. Kirk rebels, but then pretends to accede to the Scalosians' plan. Meanwhile, the bridge crew saw Kirk vanish. Spock investigates and figures out that they have hyper-accelerated invaders. He and McCoy isolate the acceleration factor and its cure. Spock accelerates himself and finds Kirk. Together, they defeat the aliens and banish them back to their planet. Kirk then takes the cure, while Spock remains hyper-accelerated until he undoes all the modifications the Scalosians had made to the Enterprise.—Tony-B4
- The Enterprise responds to a distress call from the planet Scalos, but when Kirk and a landing party beam down to the planet they find no living beings. Yet, Uhura continues to receive the urgent distress video signal, which states that there are only 5 planet inhabitants left and they are not sure what is killing their race, which once numbered in the millions. One of the landing party members Lt Compton (Geoffrey Binney) drinks water on the surface and disappears in front of McCoy. The landing party returns to Enterprise where the ship starts to "freeze" one system at a time.
Turns out the Scalosians have beamed aboard with Kirk, and are attempting to install a device in the life support system of the Enterprise. Kirk and Spock attempt to destroy it, but their phasers "disappear" in their hands and they are shoved back. They can see, but nothing else. It turns out that the Scalosians live at a much higher rate of acceleration, rendering them invisible to the human eye.
One of the Scalosians, the beautiful and seductive Deela (Kathie Browne), accelerates Kirk (by mixing her planet's water into his drink) so they can interact, where she tells him he cannot return to his normal life. For the crew, Kirk has virtually disappeared before their eyes. Deela is their queen. Kirk learns that at his current state of acceleration, they are subject to cellular degeneration and rapid aging should they suffer the slightest cut. Compton was also on-board the ship, and when he tried to stop Kirk, he was damaged and died due to accelerated aging in front of Kirk's eyes.
Rael (Jason Evers) is Deela's science officer and doesn't like that Deela has a thing for Kirk. He wants Deela all for himself. Kirk discovers that the Scalosians want to turn the Enterprise into a cryogenic storage facility for the crew (which is what the device they attached to the life support systems is doing). Basically Massive pollution and radiation on Scalos killed all the kids and turned men and women sterile. As the race withered, they resorted to mating with outside their race to survive. So they send distress calls to passer by space ships, they freeze the crew and then use them one by one to "impregnate" the women of the species. This is cause the outside species don't survive long, and they die due to accelerated aging. Kirk tells Deela not to kill his crew, and surrender so he can call upon federation resources to help them. Deela says that others have tried de-accelerating to a slower level, but died doing so. They are trapped, as is Kirk.
Kirk leaves a message for the crew (by recording it on the computer) but it is left to Mr. Spock to find a way to decipher it. Kirk escapes Deela to disable the transporter. Meanwhile Spock and McCoy analyze Kirk's coffee cup and identify the accelerating agent, that was also in Scalos water. Spock figures out that the speeding up of the Scalosian distress signal sounds like the insect buzzing that they have been hearing ever since they beamed down to the surface. Spock slows down Kirk's tape and reads his message. Meanwhile McCoy develops an antidote to the substance that accelerates. Spock drinks the accelerating agent and takes 2 doses of the antidote with him to rescue Kirk. Kirk and Spock unite to defeat Rael and stop Deela from activating the cryogenic unit. Deela knows that she has lost as Kirk will warn the FEderation, who will quarantine the entire area and no more ships will pass by. Deela and Rael are beamed back to the planet, while Kirk and Spock remove the device and repair the Enterprise.
