- Adam Carter: [via phone] The only person we should be worried about right now is Danny Hunter, okay?
- Danny Hunter: Me?
- Harry Pearce: Ruth, whatever you do in your spare time is entirely your business, as long as it doesn't cross over with our business.
- Ruth Evershed: I understand.
- Harry Pearce: I'm sure you do.
- Ruth Evershed: I mean, we can't let that sort of thing get in the way of work, can we?
- Harry Pearce: Of course we can't.
- Sam Buxton: I don't like this one bit.
- Harry Pearce: Yes, you do. And it's exactly why I asked you to look into Ruth for me. What did she tell you?
- Sam Buxton: I caught up with her in the computer room. She's been reading Source Karl transcripts. I get the feeling she's been doing it for a while. I asked her about removing them from the building and she more or less confessed straight off the bat.
- Harry Pearce: You didn't confront her, did you?
- Sam Buxton: God, no, I was playing around. She's not got a clue we're on to her.
- Harry Pearce: What's your assessment?
- Sam Buxton: I think she's really fallen for him.
- Harry Pearce: [laughs] Oh, Ruth. Well, just keep watching her for now.
- [first lines]
- Colin Wells: [at a firing range with Danny] I never had you down as a weekends weapons handler.
- Danny Hunter: Sorry, Colin, what?
- Colin Wells: I never had you down as a weekends weapons handler.
- Danny Hunter: Same goes for you.
- Sam Buxton: Ruth, you've been on a date before, haven't you?
- Ruth Evershed: [sighs and nods, then pauses] Not for a long time. Not like this.
- Waiter: Do you have a reservation?
- Ruth Evershed: Yes, for Smith.
- Waiter: Just for one. No problem. This way.
- Ruth Evershed: Why should it be?
- Waiter: Sorry?
- Ruth Evershed: Why should it be a problem?
- Waiter: Um, it isn't.
- Ruth Evershed: You just said it wouldn't be a problem. Is eating lunch on your own a problem?
- Adam Carter: Okay, well Danny and Zoe should play scarecrow, pay Newland a visit, warn him off the idea in the strongest possible terms.
- [to Ruth]
- Adam Carter: What's wrong with that idea?
- Ruth Evershed: Well, the two people you're suggesting for it.
- Adam Carter: We've never had any problem tasking them before.
- Ruth Evershed: Zoe and Danny together? At the moment, they're so entwined in each other's personal lives, a mission together could be fractious.
- Harry Pearce: Nice bit of tension. Keeps the nerves working.
- Ruth Evershed: Sam, can you keep something to yourself?
- Sam Buxton: Mm-hmm.
- Ruth Evershed: I had lunch with him.
- Sam Buxton: And?
- Ruth Evershed: Unfeasibly handsome.
- Sam Buxton: So what's the next step?
- Ruth Evershed: Why is there a next step?
- Sam Buxton: Why isn't there?
- [last lines]
- Adam Carter: [voice-over] Inside you, things will change. Only really kicks in when you get home. First, your legs. They just go from under you.
- [long pause]
- Adam Carter: And after all that, what I finally realized was, if I could look myself in the eyes, in the mirror, if I could do that, I'd be okay. If you can do that, I said to myself, chances are, you'll be alright.
- John Fortescue: It's lovely, isn't it?
- Ruth Evershed: It is. I never come down here. I live in the city, but I, I never really take time to appreciate it.
- John Fortescue: That's so true. There's no time for culture. No time for exercise. No time for love. It's appalling.
- Ruth Evershed: There's always time for love. One should make time.
- Danny Hunter: I've never killed anyone before.
- Zoe Reynolds: Of course you have.
- Danny Hunter: No. No, Zoe, I haven't.
- Zoe Reynolds: Yes, Danny, you have. We both have. You've killed more than you know. You're in this job, you do this work. You may not have had your finger on the trigger. You might not have even been in the chain of decisions that led to it. But Jesus, Danny, you and I have killed people and there's no escaping it.
