Excellent spoof of voting and elections!
gangstahippie4 November 2008
This episode came out back in 2004, when George Bush and John Kerry were running against each other in the US presidential election.I remember watching this episode back in 2004 and finding it interesting. Now it's 2008 and the presidential debate is between John McCain and Barrack Obama. The series started playing on comedy network from it's first season. It's supposed to be on it's third season now but here we have a Season 8 episode because of the presidential elections. The group PETA protests the South Park Elementary School mascot which is a cow.So now the students have to pick another mascot.Due to a practical joke by the boys, the two most popular candidates are a "Giant Douche" and a "Turd Sandwich".Cartman & Butters take the Turd Sandwich side while Kyle and Kenny take the giant douche side.Stan however does not want to vote and everybody(including Puff Daddy and his parents) ostracize him for it.They eventually banish him from South Park and he goes to live with PETA.This is a very intelligent and funny spoof of the whole presidential election! Great episode!

some of the best satire the show ever did

I'm a pretty big South Park fan, I've seen every episode so far and I consider seasons 5-8 to be the absolute peak of the show and some of the best television ever made. This episode leans a little more heavily in the "satire" area of South Park. With this show, you can have some pretty heavy episodes that tackle social issues or emotional problems that the characters go through, and then sometimes you just get an episode like the Woodland Critter Christmas that's just total nonsense. I think this is a good episode to show someone who thinks South Park is immature or incapable of handling serious concepts.

The best part of this episode, aside from the Puffy rap which always gets me, is just the fact that it'll only get better over time. Election after election we are faced with the classic "douche vs turd" debate. It never ends.

My single favorite South Park episode

I can admit that this episode has a bit of a targeted audience — those who don't identify rather well with either political party. However, for people who do fall into this category, this is an episode to cherish. Very rarely in television do we see third-party perspectives taken on in a sympathetic and yet non-extremist manner. It's really the non-extremist part which is so surprising; it's clear that the writers understand that those with opinions which don't fit easily into the conventional, socially acceptable options are people too, often relatively normal people who aren't comfortable with the zealots of the world (as can be seen by Stan's interactions with a certain radical group during the episode). This is a brilliant episode and it's a shame to see it not rated as one of the series' best.

The usual outrageousness

The point with the voting was actually a bit clever. I thought it was good political humour. The smearing and mis-characterisation of PETA was so ridiculous that sometimes even funny, but it still felt unfair for an organisation that is actually trying to peacefully help animals and the planet and therefore, humans. But it's South Park and that's expected.

I guess people who already didn't like PETA for protecting the defenceless animals will cheer this episode and those that understand that PETA is for harmony between all earth's inhabitants, won't let this change the image of the organisation. So, we can all just try to laugh. I still found the next episode on Walmart funnier, though. And cartmanland, of course.
