Three Evil Witches in Kansas
claudio_carvalho28 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
In 1604, in France, three evil witches, one of them Lana Lang's ancestral Countess Margaret Isobel Tharow, are condemned to the pyre by Magistrate Wilkins, and Isabel spits blood on a symbol on a page of a book. In the present days, Lana buys the book, and when she touches the blood entwined with the symbol, her evil ancestor possesses her body. She makes a spell, bringing the other two witches to Chloe Sullivan and Lois Lane bodies. The powerful trio tries to seize the three Kryptonian stones to increase their power. Meanwhile, a surprise birthday party for Chloe in the barn of the Kent Farm becomes really hot, and the trio cast spells against Jason Teague, Lex Luthor and a powerless Clark Kent.

"Spell" is a great episode of "Smallville". The story is excellent, and Lex finally tells Lana that he was the one that fired Jason, and not Clark. It is very funny when one of the witches believes that she is in the woods of France, instead of in Kansas speaking in English. My vote is nine.

Most Fun!
ZTrainExpress29 September 2010
This was the most fun episode of Smallville to date. Almost every one has its playful side, but this season has been a bit more heavy handed, so this was really a breath of fresh air. It also gave several of the characters a chance to step out of their usual mannerisms. Kristen Kreuk stole the show by believably playing an ancestral witch with a grudge to settle. Allison Mack and Erica Durance, on the other hand, hammed it up too much, and were much less believable in their witch-possessed bodies. For instance, it's hard to believe that after 400 years, the witch in Lois Lane would be most enamored by her breasts. But still, the fish out of water humor was fun, too. Clark vs. the witches was also a good time. As an extra bonus, new glimpses of the caves and information about the stones was a good treat. Some fans might not like this playful departure, but I did (obviously)!

This is Teen Entertainment at its finest

Warning: Spoilers
Seeing the 3 female main characters of the serie turned into an all Witchy Mean Girls Goth The Craft Like Fantasy got me drooling. All in all it was an interesting and startling way to introduce the stone mystery and involve Lana in the plot. Shout out to the fits and hairdos!! Bravo Custome department, incredibly done and matched with every girl personality. As an Spanish native speaker I didn't liked the latin spell part of the narrative, it sounded a little goofy although i would have prefered a little more french just for the fun of it, it would have been much hotter and misterious. The party semi n* almost twerked scene featuring Clark, Lana and Lois was a solid 7, meh, nevertheless it fed the plot. Also, what's with Clark he Keeps asking favors and MONEY to Lex every time he is trouble, kind of annoying and ambiguous. What was all that 'Hey budy, you got a contact in Princeton' about? Honestly, i'm not a fan of this specific line that seems to appear every few episodes. Anyway, i lloved the whole wild teen rebelious spirit of the plotline so that's why i'm rating this as a 9.

Superman on Brand
scarlettyforest27 October 2022
This has always been a fave/memorable episode, probably because it's so on brand for a Superman vs magic storyline. Fun, whacky, goes hard in places (Lex and the piano? Ow). Also, a couple of absolute banger/memorable moments, like Lana's reaction to Lois's non-virgin hair "Oh no, that won't do at all :/" lmao If you find the idea of Lana Lang being the descendant of a witch or Lois getting possessed as 'silly', hate to break it to you but that was the whole brand of superboy comics' storylines, there was always something whack going on in Smallville. The storyline's integration with the kryptonian 'stones' storyline is also a clever tie in to Superman. Straight fire here, wish they'd done magical stories like this sooner. Also, love the girls getting to act as different characters for a bit. Hell yeah.

Fun Episode!
spasek26 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Once again, Lana is at her most deplorable self. It doesn't take much for her to lose faith in her friends. Why? Because she has none in herself, which is why she is the most immature of the Smallville characters. She hides her immaturity with a certain sophistication, but she is simply a tragic character who is never able to find any real happiness.

Lana jumps to conclusions (again!) at the end of "Jinx" when she assumes that Clark got Jason fired (thus proving that Lana doesn't know even her friends as well as claims), and she is possessed by Isabelle, a French witch who speaks perfect English even in France!

Once again, the Kryptonian stones are in play, and Isabelle is seeking their power. It's also revealed in the Smallville world, something that Superman is weak against: magic. And the goofy "rock band" that is Lana, Chloe, and Lois, take great pleasure in beating and subduing him.

The episode has some hilarious moments (some intentional and some not), but if you really want to enjoy it, you should listen to the DVD commentary by Kristin Kreuk, Allison Mack, and Erica Durance!

And, of course, we have the "I'm sorry for doubting you" moment from Lana to Clark at the very end (something that the Clark/Lana merry-go-round always manages to churn out and won't be stopping anytime soon).

This is actually a fun episode despite the goofiness. My favorite moment is Martha reacting to the bra that Jonathan found in the barn.

Absolutely Dumb
Rcwilkinson1235 December 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is way stupid. It goes like this: Lana has an ancient ancestor named Countess Margaret Isabel Thoreau who was burned at the stake, along with two other women, on the count of being witches in the 1200s. However, the evil Countess is not done wrecking havoc yet. She and the other two witches take over Lana, Chloe and Lois' bodies with the intent of partying, hurting Clark, and taking control of the town and beyond.

The only important thing to take out of this episode is that Lex tells Lana that it was him who got Jason Teague fired from the high school, not Clark. It is apparent that the real reason Lex got Jason fired is because he believes that Jason has ulterior motives for being around Lana and Clark, besides the fact that she has a relationship with a student.

This episode is ridiculous, inappropriate, and way lame. It is one of the worst episodes of an otherwise fantastic series.

Worst episode of the season
JiS8711 June 2020
This was so dumb, complete useless and a waste of time it really hurt my eyes and my brain. Ancient witchcraft? Wtf... If you first wanted to introduce magic to Superman's story, as one of his biggest weakness, at least do a better job than this. They should have made a limit of 20 episodes a season, which would have maybe at least risen the quality or something, and would have written off utter lame episodes like this one.

If you like witch stories...

Warning: Spoilers
The problem with season 4, is that there are no middle grounds. Episodes are either good or bad. This one however, is of the exception, it's fun. And gets the season arc evolve smoothly, and even though I'm not a fan of that Thoreau's storyline. I guess it was a way to have Lana in on the show's mythology, without pushing it too far (?) I like those Smallville fillers, freaks of the week, where the humor, horror and drama was good. It reminded me of the early days of the show, which I love. And even if the music team faced production cuts, for the home entertainment releases, the series still used good pop music. In this one in particular, you can hear Gwen Stefani and Keane. But the most fun, is in the way the actresses played their possessed characters. People who love Hocus Pocus, will clearly enjoy the inspiration. And excuse writers for the digression.

Oh, and to those PC freaks, shocked by the Jason/Lana relationship. The episode showed they never slept together. So chill.
