The Beauty and the Beast
claudio_carvalho21 May 2006
Abigail Fine (Brainna Brown), a student full of acne, submits to a plastic surgery with her mother Dr. Elaine Fine (Julianne Christie) and becomes very beautiful, but with a weird kiss. Clark Kent decides to join the football team of Smallville High without consulting and against the will of his father Jonathan Kent. Martha Kent is hired to manage the Talon. Lois Lane is transferred to Smallville High School, begins to work for The Torch and is very close to Clark Kent.

"Facade" is a simple episode of "Smallville" without any great surprise. Lois Lane is closer to Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan seems to be a little jealous. My vote is seven.

Lana is 18. That makes her an adult. Get a grip Other than that. A little coaching might help.

Clark tries out for the football team
Rcwilkinson1234 December 2007
An exciting development meant for the overall story arc of season four begins in this episode.

Clark, contrary to his father's beliefs, tries out for the football team. Obviously, he is great. Meanwhile, a girl named Abigail undergoes kryptonite-assisted plastic surgery to remove her horribly mangled acne face to become a stunning, beautiful girl for her last year in high school. Lois takes on her first-ever story from Chloe to investigate how this miraculously happened to Abigail, when she runs into the beauty-obsessed mother.

This episode is solid. No spectacular action sequences, but some funny moments and some interesting story lines develop here, including the fact that Jason Teague, Lana's boyfriend from Paris, has moved to Smallville to be with her, and is an assistant coach for the football team. There's a great line from Lois about Abigail getting plastic surgery: "Isn't she only 17? Isn't that kinda like taking the cookies out of the oven before they are fully baked?" Though her character has improved the last two seasons, I may not like the Lois character overall in this show, but the writers do give her some pretty humorous lines from time to time.

A very special episode of Smallville
Ace_of_Sevens11 December 2007
Lois and the football team and the larger continuity of the episode are great, but this episode really got on my nerves. It was chock-full of didactic and cloying after-school-specialness. If they are trying to tell us that we shouldn't be so concerned about looking good, how about putting an ugly person on the show? There are ways to treat this topic that would have worked, but this wasn't one of them. It just comes across as preachy and hypocritical, with a bit of the early season's xenophobia, which is a bad combination. The villain is terribly one-note and Abigail isn't taken seriously as a character. If not for the presence of Lois, this would rate even lower.

What's the message?
LittleStorpingInTheSwuff17 September 2018
So an assistant football coach is dating a student? What message are the writers trying to tell the younger targeted audience? It's okay for teen girls to date older men? Maybe the guy is only in his early twenties, but it's still the wrong message to send. People in some form of authority (which a football coach is) shouldn't be dating students, period. The X-files subplot of the week was interesting, otherwise I would rate this episode even lower.
