Disclosing the Secret Powers to a Friend
claudio_carvalho22 April 2006
When the sick Dr. Steven Hamilton (Joe Morton) becomes a liability to Lex Luthor, he terminates their contract. Dr. Hamilton leaves the mansion and drives through the road like a lunatic and provokes a serious accident with a truck driven by Ray Wallace (Andrew Jackson). The truck capsizes in a cornfield near Clark Kent's spacecraft and Pete Ross sees the UFO trying to rescue Ray. On the next morning, Pete asks Clark to help him to bring the object to his workshop. When Dr. Hamilton steels the spacecraft, Pete believes Clark has stolen and he discloses his secret to his friend. Meanwhile Lionel Luthor moves to Luthor's mansion, and Nell is in love with Dean.

"Duplicity" is another great episode of "Smallville". There are many parallel stories, and the most important is the revelation of Clark to Pete. I am curious to see how Pete Ross will handle the weight of this secret in the next episodes. My vote is nine.

A Close Friend Learns a Secret
Rcwilkinson12317 September 2007
The most interesting thing to see out of this episode was Clark's best friend Pete Ross discovering Clark's secret. This knowledge will become something of a curse for Pete in the time he remains in the town.

Pete discovers the ship that Clark came down from Krypton in an open field after witnessing the crash of Dr. Hamilton, whose contract was terminated with Lex Luthor after repeated exposure to the mysterious green substances caused him to be ineffective in his scientific investigations of the substance. Unfortunately, Dr. Hamilton also sees the spacecraft. Pete urges Clark to help him take the craft to his cellar, where he can explore it himself. This forces Clark to reveal the truth to Pete. Not surprisingly, Pete initially does not take this information well. He is suddenly freaked out just by being in the presence of Clark, and is fiercely tempted to tell local authorities. But as a good friend, and after a discussion with the Kents, Pete restrains and morally decides to keep the secret.

"Duplicity" carries a huge responsibility for revealing crucial moments in young Superman's life, and the writers and all involved in this episode did a really good job with it. It is interesting to observe the burden that Pete carries the remainder of the time he remains in the town, let alone that fact that someone outside of Clark's parents for the first time has the responsibility to keep this world-breaking news a secret.

Pete discovers Clark's secret...
m-4782626 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
But it's such a dull episode. I always get bored watching it. Which is weird, because there were two major returns. « blind » Lionel and Lex's former accomplice in crime. Who seems to be afflicted by the same evil, as the former season one Afro American employee of Luthor corp. And it can't be a coincidence. Though the episode ends with him defeated, we still don't know what caused the seizures... Lana and Chloe's friendship grows, which is the only good arc for the Chloe character this season. While Lana gets more suspicious about Clark's special abilities. Her aunt having a new fiancé was obviously a way for her to get emancipated, and then move into the Talon's « student's room ». And explain Sarah-Jane Redmond's absence. Yet I never understood why they had to make Lana an adopted child. It didn't add anything to the story. Either way, I'm not sure how I feel about this episode, that could be important to some. Only never justified being made so early, with so few interesting scenes attached to it.
