Miracles Have a Price
claudio_carvalho5 July 2007
After being released from a prison in a laboratory of Luthorcorp's Cyntechnics by the scientist Dr. Hong, the former football player Victor Stone is chased by armed security guards and hit by Lana's truck, without any harm. The car is totally destroyed, Lana wounds her forehead and Victor takes her to a hospital. Lana calls Clark, and he meets Victor, who played football with him in high-school and died in a car crash. Victor explained that he became a living machine as part of the machine project researched by the evil Dr. Allister Krieg sponsored by Luthorcorp. Further, he misses his girlfriend Katherine. Clark promises to help him and visits Lex, who lies to him and tells that he was not aware of the project. Meanwhile, Martha is blackmailed with a DVD and Lionel offers to help her.

In this good episode, the God's complex and megalomania of Lex Luthor is increasing and his dark side is becoming clearer with his evil and disloyal attitudes with Clark. The naive Martha accepts the offer of her "solicitous friend" Lionel Luthor, but she does not realize the price of the gentle support of her treacherous acquaintance. I found a little inconsistent the situation of Clark easily disclosing his abilities to Victor while hiding them from his beloved Lana. My vote is eight.

The third fantastic episode of a DC Comics hero
Rcwilkinson12321 April 2008
Much like the introduction of the character The Flash from the Season 4 episode 'Run,' or Arthur Curry earlier this season, Smallville introduces another superhero from DC Comics lore in Victor Stone, later known as Cyborg.

Clark encounters a lab escapee named Victor, who played against Clark in the football state championship the year before in their senior years of high school. Victor explains that he was part of a fatal crash, and nearly all of his body was destroyed. However, he woke up to a body made up of cybernetic parts, mostly a machine. Victor is retrieved back to the lab despite the intentions of a sympathetic surgeon/scientist, as Lex Luthor intends to do additional studies on the scientific breakthrough. Victor also is concerned about how his former girlfriend will accept his new cybernetic state.

The greatest appeal of this episode was the black-and-white clarity of Clark's willingness to ally with others with unique powers, while Lex, in his continuous turn towards evil, has no problem doing ethically questionable research on such people. Additionally, Victor Stone is a cool character from DC Comics, normally part of some incarnation of the Teen Titans.

The Naive and Meddling Lana Lang Just Gets Worse!
spasek2 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
By this point in Season 5, I was just hoping for Lana to go away and have Clark drop her like a bad habit. While it was questionable for Clark to withhold his secret in the first half of this season, no doubt remained by this time.

As Lana becomes closer to Lex, it's obvious she can't be trusted, and Clark's reluctance and hesitation is justified, and like a naive Hallmark schoolgirl, she begins preaching to Victor Stone about his love life and defending Lex.

Never mind that Victor Stone is older than Clark as Cyborg is a member of the Teen Titans while Superman is part of the Justice League. DC never felt comfortable using Green Lantern, so they booted Cyborg to the "big leagues" for their sham of a movie.

This is another excellent addition of a superhero into the Smallville universe. Victor finds himself a reluctant recipient of bionic implants as well as in a precarious position with his girlfriend, wondering if she will be able to overlook the fact that he's more machine than man.

It's almost humorous to see Lana gazing like a silly romantic watching a Hallmark movie at Victor and Katherine while Clark simply looks on.

I enjoyed the Lionel/Martha storyline of Martha being blackmailed and Lionel coming in to "rescue" her, despite the fact that we all know full well what's really going on.

With all of the players of the episode "Justice" showcased except for Green Arrow, we're given a nice taste of Cyborg. This was a character who I felt was compelling enough to possibly be given his own series.

Another great episode of Season Five
jennyxj096 March 2007
I was quite speechless after watching Cyborg. Probably that's because I see two parallels depicted in an exquisite way. One clearly is the love between Clark and Lana and that between the Cyborg man Victor and his girlfriend, the other treacheries of Lex and of his father to Clark and Martha respectively. Each resulted in a completely different ending. This is not the episode that you may simply walk away when it's over; nor does it contain anything that would make you edge over your seat with sweaty hands. It will make you think---speculate for a better word, what it is that makes the similar kinds of people get different results out of their similar actions in similar settings. Would one of the answers be Attitude? There is definitely a surprised revelation of Lionel's attitude toward Clark's secrets.

Despite its lack of stunning actions and surprising plots, I give ten stars for a good try at developing depth of the characters.

This episode annoyed me...
m-4782615 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As you grow older, you realize nothing is simple. And in « Cyborg », Lex's speech to Clark, that was supposed to make him look evil, again. Was the most reasonable thing he could've told him, considering. After all, it's because of Lex's researchers Victor Stone isn't decomposing in a coffin somewhere. And wether he wants it or not, due to the heavy material used on his « corpse », he's his property now. This episode showed once again how naive the writing on Smallville could get this season. But was nothing compared to « Tomb » that was the season's lowest point after « Thirst ». Jonathan's death putting a strain on Clark and Lana's relationship, was to be predicted. But it also followed the comics evolution. Which I prefer, because they got really boring lately, and just were not meant to be. Lionel making it his quest to protect Clark's secret, is another storyline I like. And though it is impossible for ethics only, to have Martha falling for him. I always have this secret wish, of them together, every time I rewatch those episodes. I guess it would be one heroine too many, sleeping with the enemy... The music department did a another good selection, with both « Life after Love » and « Casta Diva » in unexpected places.
