- Homer attempts suicide over no beer, but gets over it when he saves his family from getting hit by a truck. He then gets obsessed with safety as his new purpose in life.

- Homer attempts suicide because they're out of beer, Homer's out of money, and when Homer smashes Bart's piggy bank, it only has a few cents in it. However, when his family is about to get hit by a truck, Homer saves them and finds a new purpose in life: SAFETY, starting with a stop sign where they almost got hit, and stopping with the nuclear plant he got fired (and rehired as a safety inspector) from.
