Mad Mel

The first episode of Season 11 kicks off with guest Mel Gibson in one of the better celebrity episodes. I found this episode very entertaining and love the way Mel and Homer interacted, all in all a great episode

Mr Smith goes to Washington - Homer's version

Although perhaps past what many people describe as being its 'peak' 'The Simpsons' is still a great show at this point and this episode is a fine example of that.

Full of great laughs, and a star cameo that actually has some value rather than being just shoved in, it's a fun jab at Hollywood and celeb culture that still holds up all these years later.

A really fun episode.

...but Mel Gibson sucks as a human being and retroactively ruined this episode.

Funny!

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is like a dedication to Mel Gibson's earlier work, because it makes references to Lethal Weapon and Mad Max, and even a few to Braveheart. It's one of the funnier episodes, and I sometimes can't help but wonder if Mel cracked up laughing when he was filming this episode. In this episode, Mel films a remake of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", and everyone loves it except Homer, who tells Mel Gibson its not like the work that made him famous(mad max and lethal weapon) and cool, Mel agrees and he and Homer re shoot it to make it better, with hilarious results. It's one of my personal favorite episodes, because I also loved the Lethal Weapon and Mad Max movies. One thing though, Mel tells the producers in this episode he makes action movies because guys like Homer, but I guess Mel also forgot that he filmed the Romance Movie "Forever Young", which was not an action movie, but thats not important. Mel Gibson is the man. If you're a fan of his early work and wouldn't mind seeing it mixed in with some Simpson's humor, you'll love this episode.

Very prophetic line from Mel Gibson..."I speed all the time but the cops never give me a ticket"

Warning: Spoilers
Beyond Blunderdome has one of the most inspired guest castings ever, with Mel Gibson playing himself, well probably more his Riggs persona from Lethal Weapon, and he doesn't disappointed. Lots of laugh out loud moments, especially when Mel's character takes matters into his own hands during a congressional debate. Loved it!

Two lines that are Simpsons classics. One was when the film production executive accuses Mel of making a film worse than Godfather III!!!! Mel's response was priceless! The second was chillingly prophetic big time, when Mel boats to Homer "I speed all the time but the cops never give me a ticket." Yikes! A few years later Mel got into all sorts when a cop did pull him over, and Mel's response made headlines all over the world. Just Google it.

My opinion, not yours, agree, disagree!

POSTIVES Mel Gibson-It was a great idea to have Mel Gibson to appear in the Simpsons. Humour- It's okay, a few laughs here and there.

NEGATIVES Story- I didn't like the story, it felt boring and weak. In someways what was the point of the storyline? It does a 360 at the end. Humour- It was okay, but nothing too great and nothing to remember about, it's shame way to start off a season Mel Gibson- It was good to have him in, but it failed, it just didn't work for me for his storyline. OVERALL

The episode is okay, but it's a shame on the way how it started off the season in a fizzled out way, I was looking forward to this, but I was left bored throughout the episode.

Putting Mel Gibson on a pedestal, (Edna's voice:) Meh!
Scorfio3 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't really like this episode when it came out. After all these years, it's even worse.

The entire episode, Mel Gibson is being adored by everyone in the Simpson universe. Or as Moe describes it: "we could never lie to you, Mel.". When looking back at it now, it seems as if the writers were so happy to get Mel Gibson into the show, they made it into an episode where the actor was more important than the jokes. In the past, famous people appeared in The Simpsons, but they alleviated the episode to a higher level. This episode is just the Mel Gibson Spectacular.

It does has some fun jokes. Sneaking in John Travolta and Robert Downey Jr. made for fun jokes, without making the celebrity overly present.

It might be hell being Mel, but watching this episode wasn't all that great either.

simpsons died of murder, not a natural dead

Warning: Spoilers
Homer says three things here that made me gasp:

said that marge was his property, said he watched emotional movies to get marge in the sack (and then high fived mel gibson), and said that his family was a "burden" (or something like it).

-x-

This episode was written by someone who think that a "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" Mel Gibson remake would be a good idea, a prestige film.

This episode reverses the tone completely of the show. It sucks up to power and celebrity, while it mocks the stupidity of homer as a singular character (It doesn't even assume the appearance of satire).

Homer just goes around doing whatever he wants without any motive. The plot his wacky and zanny, but without any comedic rhythm.

The humor is based on quick and stupid commentary on celebrities (Mel, Downey Jr., Travolta).

-x-

This episode was bad even before Mel Gibson's reputation turned sour. I remember being 14 and disliking this episode.
