Ive been watching the shield and it's been amazing so far. I'd actually say most of the episode ratings at least so far are quite underrated. I don't know why the ratings are much lower that most shows this well rated, but this one in particular was one of the lowest in the show and I'd say this is the best of the season so far.
It was a surprisingly fun episode with the introduction to Claudette's new team, forcing Vic to work with new people. There was a lot of humor that hit, more than usual. This episode felt quite long, but i mean this in a good way because there's so much it deals with.
Dutch going hard in a rape interrogation making a mentally ill sex offender believe he's broken and commit another rape. I think it's easy to view Dutch as one of the "good cops." And he is one of the better ones at least compared to the ones we focus on in the show, but he also shows some lack of understanding of how to deal with the mentally Ill or some of these people, (like most people and institutions still do today) plus how his mentality affects his cases. I think this sets up his arc for the season.
Aceveda dealing with a politician (I think he was related to schools I don't remember the term) being exposed for solicitation, once again struggling to continue or stop the corruption.
Shane dealing with his seemingly first real relationship, and also the tension with him potentially putting hit on him us young The money train money on a car for his girlfriend. Pretty messed up he forced a marriage because she got pregnant. It's nice to see Shane in a different light, but I don't think this will end well.
Vic dealing with his wife's divorce still, not being able to stay with her daughter for a bit longer, whilst Connie is brought back up. I like how this death still affects Vic, it's one of the more messed up deaths, though I saw it coming. The way Vic deals with the the prostitute Farrah was so messed up, and uncomfortable, but worked very well for the character. I think that Connie's death really affected Vic, and having this be on the forefront this episode made Vic express his self hatred for letting that happen on the outside. Connie was always one of the only people Vic truly helped and was good to, after his death he didn't have anything to balance himself out (even if his bad FAR out weighs the good) and it caused him to further sink into his evil. Seeing where Connie's son ended up is pretty depressing.
This episode had a ton of social commentary from the damaging way authorities deal might deal with the mentally ill, to to the emotional perversion of prostitution, or the flawed foster care system.
Despite having a lot of funnier scenes it's actually one of the darker episodes. Doesn't develop too much plot wise, but this was just a very well executed episode, with both profound darkness, and humor that somehow worked well together. I was a bit apprehensive with the longest episode count for a season, but if the episodes that don't have as much plot development are as good as this one I think this season will be excellent.
