Tour de force performance by Brion James
lor_11 March 2017
The late character actor Brion James has a following, but never received the accolades he deserved, much like another unsung character actor I greatly admired as a kid, John Davis Chandler. This episode of "The Sentinel" has Brion giving a performance that is both spell-binding and yet underplayed.

That's because the actor has a piercing intensity that he can establish with his eyes alone that many an award-winning superstar might envy. His role here is a familiar one, with elements of Hannibal Lecter and a foreshadowing of the weekly villain to come in the series "Criminal Minds". The main plot hook of how he can seemingly be committing new crimes while safely salted away in prison is well-written and executed.

I was not a fan of this cult sci-fi oriented series, largely because I moved away from gimmicky entertainment as I grew older, after adoring fantasy/horror/sci-fi overmuch in my youth. This particular episode makes little to no use of the show's hero having superhero/paranormal abilities, and would just as well have played as a down-to-Earth segment on "Criminal Minds" or any other of the police procedurals currently on the air.
