Iconic Character is Born

Warning: Spoilers
In "The Jimmy", George goes in on a business venture to sell training shoes with an idiosyncratic member of his gym who refers to himself in the third person. Elaine accidentally agrees to go on a date with Jimmy after getting confused by his way of speaking. The Yankee organization believes George is behind a string of thefts due to his constant sweating and talk of selling athletic goods via telephone. Jerry has a dentist appointment with Tim Whatley but begins to feel that the dentist office is becoming oddly sexualized. Kramer is mistaken for a mentally handicapped person after taking a heavy dose of Novocain. His ensuing drool causes the Jimmy to slip in the locker room and hurt himself.

The Jimmy is one of my favorite tertiary characters of Seinfeld. He makes me want to refer to myself in the third person. His upbeat, strange attitude is infectious and really adds a lot to this episode. Using Kramer's faux-portrayal as a mentally handicapped person for comedic effect isn't great by modern standards and something I doubt would fly on a sitcom released today. The character of Jimmy though is so great and overpowering that I can't help but adore this episode because of it.

A Seinfeld episode that is actually "laugh out loud" funny
professor_of_gamez25 April 2022
I have always enjoyed Seinfeld (the storylines and characters), but never found it particularly funny (especially the stand-up before and after (sometimes during) each episode).

This episode IS actually "laugh out loud" funny. Kramer's performance is hysterical.

Of course this episode could never be made today (as it would be considered offensive to the mentally challenged).

Jimmy Liked This One
Hitchcoc9 January 2023
There are a couple of dynamite things here. We are back the health club and we meet Jimmy. He talks without using pronouns for himself. He is an arrogant jerk who likes to let everyone know it. Elaine mistakes him for another guy because she doesn't know his schtick. George hooks up with Jimmy, hoping to franchise some ridiculous looking athletic shoes. Kramer has center stage, however. He has been to the dentist and can't talk. He is also coming out of laughing gas. He is mistaken for a mentally handicapped man and given tickets to a fund raiser for that particular group. Mel Torme is singing at the fundraiser. What Michael Richards does is beyond belief.

"George is getting upset!"

Season 6, Episode 18, "The Jimmy"

"The Jimmy" shows better than any other episode just how different season 6 was from seasons 4 and 5. While the earlier seasons relied heavily on the four main characters, the interactions between them in very limited settings, and their dealings with various social situations, season 6 began to rely on more supporting characters, more locations, more physical comedy and gags, and more outlandish situations.

None of which really takes anything away from the quality. While the scripts are less tight, the show is also less wordy and as a result constantly funny. "The Jimmy" is in fact one of the funniest Seinfeld episodes ever, Michael Richards and Jason Alexander are both in top form and Bryan Cranston makes yet another memorable appearance as jerkass dentist Tim Whatley. Classic.

Sirus loves this episode.

Warning: Spoilers
The Plot of the episode: The gang meets a guy at the gym named Jimmy, who talks about himself in third person. Elaine asks Jimmy to the AMCA without even knowing it. Thanks to Jimmy's big shoes and getting way too much Novocaine from Tim Whatley, Mel Torme is under the impression that Kramer is a retard and decides to host a fund raiser type deal for him. Jerry suspects Tim Whatly of rape when he finds porn in Whatley's waiting room and thinks that he was raped.

After seeing The Jimmy, I started to refer to myself in third person. I think it is kind of cool. I have never really liked Tim Whatley(Brian Cranston from Malcolm in the middle and Breaking Bad). I mean I like Brian Cranston, but not Tim Whatly. I just don't think Whatly is a good guy. I think that The Jimmy is a funny episode because of many things. Also because Mel Torme thinks that Kramer is a retard. I think Kramer is a retard. Everyone else does. Not really a retard, but as moron.

Would never fly today
OldMovieRob30 November 2023
This episode tops the "cigar Store Indian" in terms of episodes that would be far too offensive to ever fly today. Depicting Kramer as mentally challenged (because he was overloaded with Novocain) and also the implication that something awful was done to Jerry while he was sedated at the dentist are two ideas that today's television would never have allowed, but Seinfeld went ahead with. I wonder sometimes if the censors at the time had an issue with this or not. The subplot with "the Jimmy" was actually hilarious, especially if you've known surreal individuals like this who actually talk this way.

What was accepted in the 90's shows

Warning: Spoilers
I just think it is a clash of generations to watch some TV shows. This series were really revolutionary to sitcons, but also there's a lot o sexism happening, sometimes during a whole episode.

This Jimmy one, could be a really funny experience if it wasnt for the dentist part. What the hell were the writers thinking by writing a r4pe joke? Bryan Cranston making a role of a r4per? Seinfeld, the main character as the victim , everything is so wrong with this plot.

Bryan Cranston returns
safenoe1 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Bryan Cranston returns as Tim Whatley, the dentist, and this was I think 14 years before he became a massive superstar in Breaking Bad, and of course before that the dad in Malcolm in the Middle.

Kung Pao is the focus here, and anyway that's an object of mirth rather too predictably amongst Kramer, and when his body jerked at the spiciness of the kung pao it's as though his body was being pierced with pitchforks if you know what I mean in an ironic way. I'm enjoying re-watching most episodes of Seinfeld after having first watched it upon its debut, and it's hard to believe Seinfeld debuted over 30 years ago.
