Season 6, Episode 1, "The Chaperone"

Season 5 of Seinfeld was a tough act to follow. The season 6 premiere was a decent episode with some hilarious moments, but it doesn't rise to the standards set be season 5 and is ultimately less memorable than most.

The episode had to deal with the repercussions of two major events from the season 5 finale. George's new job with the NY Yankees was explored for comedic possibilities and it has some solid moments, though it will become better later on in the season (with George Steinbrener getting a more prominent role). Elaine, who lost her job in the season 5 finale, didn't stay unemployed for long, and the season 6 opener finds her meeting her new boss - Mr. Justin Pitt, played by the wonderful Ian Abercrombie, who would supply some of the season's finest moments.

A good episode but not great; look for better things further on in the season.

The Introduction of Mr. Pitt
Samuel-Shovel19 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Season 6 starts off with a bang with "The Chaperone". Jerry meets Miss Rhode Island and goes on a date her, chaperoned by Kramer. Kramer soon inserts himself as her Miss America's coach and preps her for a title run. While the whole gang (minus Elaine who is too busy buying sock for her new employer) are at Atlantic City, Jerry accidentally kills the doves in Miss Rhode Island's magic act and ruins her chance at the crown. Meanwhile the new cotton uniforms George has implemented for the Yankees shrink and cause the team difficulty.

There's nothing in this episode memorably quotable but the story lines are humorous enough and we get an introduction to Elaine's new boss Mr. Pitt, a great secondary character of Season 6.

Socks, Miss America, Dead Pigeons, and Cotton Uniforms

Some pretty funny stuff, but not quite as sparkling as the last ones. We begin to see the implosion of George Costanza as he pushes for things which grow out of his own self importance. He acts like he is the general manager of the Yankees, going way overboard. Elaine gets a job with an old publisher becoming his personal assistant and the result is really sad. Kramer finagles his way into the Miss America pageant becoming the personal aide to Miss Rhode Island. Jerry commits and act that destroys the young woman's chances. There is a lot going on that will set the stage for the second episode of season six.

Classic.

Warning: Spoilers
The Plot: Elaine has finally found a job as Justin Pitt's assistant. Jerry has started dating a woman from the Miss America show. When she needs a chaperone, Kramer jumps on it and it drives Jerry insane. They ask Elaine to come with them to the pageant but she can't because she's trying to find Mr. Pitt a pair of socks. When Jerry and George are sleeping, they hear birds outside of their room. So George goes and pours water on them. It turns out that they died and she is in trouble.

I will never forget The Chaperone. I will mostly remember it by how George kills the birds and how Elaine has to get the socks for Mr. Pitt. Every Seinfeld episode is fantastic, so you can't go wrong. The chaperone is funny and I would've killed Kramer. I would've been furious if Kramer was doing that.

ThunderKing629 May 2023
A very nice episode.

This review was made and published on May day 29 in the year of 2023rd in century 21st.

What happened in this episode?

Jerry tries to date Miss Rhode Island

Kramer tries to help Miss Rhode Island win the pageant

George makes the New York city Yankees wear cotton uniforms.

Elaine deals with Mr. Pit.

The Story and production overview: A fun story which is carried by the big 3 George, Jerry and Kramer.

It has a few laughs and watching Kramer pick apart Miss Rhode Island was engaging.

Laugh meter: 7

Highlight: Jerry hacking the birds and Kramer finding out.

Girlfriend attractiveness level: Miss Rhode Island was a good 7.4. Probably an 8 with better lighting and make up.

Overall: a steady fun episode.

What can be learned?: never let someone like Kramer pick you apart.

Verdict: Poor doves.

Introducing Justin Pitt
safenoe15 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
British actor Ian Abercrombie makes his debut as Elaine's new and mercurial boss Justin Pitt, and I loved the scene where Jerry calls Elaine while she's attending to Mr Pitt's sock dilemma, and Elaine isn't able to participate by going with the Scooby gang. Anyway, George offers his wisdom to the NY Yankees and things go pear-shaped when the cotton uniforms end up shrinking, much to the chagrin of George.

Kramer acts as a muse to Ms Rhode Island, and much to disastrous consequences with the pigeons at the hotel the night before the pageant. Anyway, I'm enjoying re-watching Seinfeld, having first watched it when it debuted in the 1990s.

Poise!Poise!
lbowdls6 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is an episode that gets better to me with each viewing it is a 'Most unusual' episode. It's 'a shame' that Jerry kills Miss Rhode Island's doves but Kramer doesn't give up trying to coach her to victory leading to the unfortunate, hilarious ending of watching Miss Rhode Island singing very badly 'It's a must unusual day' and Kramer shouting out Poise Poise! A classic!
