The farmer's daughter's cry of "Goodbye, Norman! Goodbye!" at the end was not originally scripted. Actress Karen Lynn Scott forgot that Wayne Knight's character was called Newman and accidentally called him "Norman", but this actually made the scene funnier, so it was kept in. Newman's first name was never revealed during the series.
Wayne Knight credits this episode with prompting him to become healthier. After filming several takes of the last scene, in which Newman and Kramer (Michael Richards) dash through a corn field, Knight began experiencing heart palpitations from running so animatedly. After visiting his doctor, he was told that his blood pressure was very high and that he was close to developing diabetes. He thus began an active attempt to get into better shape. Knight has since shed much of his formerly trademark girth and lost 117 pounds and is a much slimmer and healthier man.
This is the first episode to depict one of the main characters using a cell phone.
In September 2007, a 15-person operation was busted for illegally smuggling millions of beverage containers from other states and cashing the deposit in Michigan. Police found over $500,000 in cash. Unlike Kramer's (Michael Richards) scheme, the operation sold the cans to merchants at a discount, who then redeemed them for full value.
In reference to Tony the mechanic (Brad Garrett) taking off with Jerry's (Jerry Seinfeld) car, Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) asks why he left the Kennedy golf clubs in the back seat, to which he responds: "I didn't count on my mechanic pulling a Mary Beth Whitehead". This refers to the case of Whitehead, who entered into a surrogacy agreement in the mid 1980s to carry a baby to term for a married couple, the Sterns. However, after delivering the baby, Whitehead changed her mind and determined she wanted to keep the child. She was the biological mother, as her egg was inseminated with Stern's sperm. The case was the first in an American court to result in a ruling on the validity of surrogacy. Whitehead was recognized as the baby's legal mother, but ultimately Stern was awarded custody, while Whitehead was granted visitation rights.
