Good start to an entertaining show
vistaine9 January 2008
Since the other comment focused solely on one minor cast member change, I felt this show deserved a real comment. The show itself is a light bit of romping fair, clearly produced to harness the popularity of the Dead Zone and Monk on USA, and it delivers. The premise is a slacker whose police office father trained him from a young age to be very observant. This observance coupled with a quick wit gives him a Scooby gang/Encyclopedia Brown style way of solving crimes. Having attempted to do this occasionally as a 'good samaritan' for the police results in them pegging him for a crime, thinking that only someone with inside knowledge could do it. His only way out--pretend he is psychic. The buy it, hook line and sinker, and put him on another case, which leads to a whole new career.

The pilot introduces the main cast of characters (although one of the group is replaced, with decent plot explanation, by the second episode). James Roday is over the top as Shawn, and while his antics can get a bit tiresome, he brings a nice life to the show. Dule Hill plays his best friend and reluctant partner Gus, who gets the lion's share of the good lines, and plays the put-upon but loyal companion to a T. Timothy Omundson brings all the gravitas you'd expect from a hard boiled police detective, unaware that he is the comic relief in the world of Shawn, and is perfect. And Corbin Bernsen shines in the screen time he gets as Shawn's frustrated father, who deep down cares about his son, but is too stubborn at trying to mold him into a protégé.

All in all, a well rounded pilot, that sets the rest of the series into motion.

A very good start

Warning: Spoilers
This show has a very strong first episode, and one that almost immediately pulls you in. Setting up various questions, such as why do Shawn and his father not have a good relationship? Questions like how many people will eventually come around to the idea that Shawn is psychic or not? It sets up the friendship with Shawn and Gus very well, and helps you believe right away that they really are friends who have been around a while. The only major down side is the fact that the woman who works with Lassie is never shown again after this episode, but she does get replaced with Jules, the love interest in the show. And there is a very good tribute to her in season 7, where it is confirmed that she was killed in the line of fire, and that the shooting practice area is now dedicated to her in her honor. Which is a nice long term pay off.

Anne Dudek is ONLY in this episode
maymad19 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
RATING IS BASED ON THE PILOT EPISODE ONLY

Rant:

For those (mostly) male viewers who enjoyed Anne Dudek's prescence/role in this pilot episode please note that...

***She DOESN'T appear in ANY other episode of this series***

Too bad .. it is a big drawback and just for that I'm not getting this series on DVD...temperamental, isn't it?

End of rant.

The series;

good writing, great exterior shots, and Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller's son in the lead, with the same acting abilities....

One of my all time favourites, I love that they made a film but I truly which they would just bring it back! The pilot is excellent, funny, interesting and showcases the true talent of the cast.
