Bodie and Doyle have a mountain to climb...
canndyman16 August 2020
25 years ago, young Suzy Carter suddenly died after falling out of the window of a hotel room, apparently committing suicide. She was there under police protection, as she was about to give vital evidence in a corruption case that would have incriminated a successful & well-respected businessman.

But, in present day 1978, the head of MI6's last words as he lies on his deathbed are 'I killed Suzy Carter'. Cowley is approached, as it is felt his squad are best-placed to find the truth of what happened... and are the least corruptible. But, it seems there's someone out there who doesn't want the the truth to be found -and soon everyone who was involved in Suzy's case back in 1953 are being picked off one by one by a professional and elusive hitman. Not only that, but all records of the historic case seem to have mysteriously gone missing...

This is a good, solid story from the first season, and offers a slightly different approach - what with the pre-credits sequence being set so far back in the past. Despite the sombre plot, there's still plenty of room for humor - Bodie & Doyle's scenes with new CI5 recruit Tony are hilarious, as they chide him for referring to Cowley as 'The Cow' and then play a childish prank on him in the locker room (at Cowley's expense) - only to be caught out in the act by The Cow himself like naughty schoolboys.

Trying to make actors looks 25 years younger in the opening sequence perhaps isn't entirely convincing - maybe it would have been wiser to have made this event 10 years ago or so (although the year of 1953 is what gives the episode its title, & is referred to throughout).

There's a good scene early on where the boys confront the corrupt Turvey in his mansion, and get short thrift (Bodie in particular being on the receiving end of Turvey's anger) - but you get the feeling this spurs him on even more to find the evidence they need to nail him.

This is an enjoyable tale of betrayal and retribution, and of the need to bring those to book who thought they had gotten away with their crimes of the past.

THE PROFESSIONALS – Everest Was Also Conquered – 1978

This is episode eight of the 1977 to 1983, UK, action-crime series, THE PROFESSIONALS. Gordon Jackson is in charge of CI-5, a group of men drawn from the SAS, Police and other law enforcement agencies. Their mandate is to stop acts of terrorism and threats against the UK.

MI-5 Chief Jackson is paid a visit from political bigwig, Michael Denison. Denison tells Jackson that a former head of MI-6 made a deathbed confession about the 20 year old murder of a government witness in a corruption case. Denison is in line for a high government post and wants the confession looked into quietly.

Jackson assigns agents Martin Shaw and Lewis to look into the matter. They go through all the records and come up with the name of multi-millionaire Richard Greene. Greene it seems was involved with plenty of underhanded arms deals and the like. There had been a witness to these deals that took a convenient 6 floor dive out a hotel window. At the time it was ruled a suicide.

Collins and Shaw of course dig further and find several cops on the protection detail at the time are rather well off now in the cash department. Questions are asked and more murders begin to happen. This all leads back to Dennison and Greene. Dennison has been on the Greene payroll for years. He had hoped for a swift under the carpet investigation by Jackson and his boys. This of course is not what Denison gets as both he and Greene are taken into custody.

Everest Was Also Conquered

Cowley is asked to investigate the death bed confession of a former spy chief. Before he died, he said 'I killed Suzie Carter.'

Bodie and Doyle find out that Suzie Carter died in 1953. The records have gone missing. When they try to find the major players involved, they find that a professional hitman has got to them first.

Bodie and Doyle do find out that the witnesses to any killing of Suzie Carter became seriously wealthy. However Cowley thinks he is being played.

A rather straightforward episode and better for it. Some seriously good repartee between Bodie and Doyle. Bodie certainly did not like good malt whiskey thrown at his face. He also did not like a colleague being gunned down as well.

Blast from the past

Warning: Spoilers
EVEREST WAS ALSO CONQUERED is something of a "blast from the past" episode, beginning with an arresting pre-credits sequence set in the 1950s and moving on to a prior scandal from decades previously affecting those surviving into the presence. The usual action and car chases are shoehorned into this plotline, along with the fun of seeing genuine stars of yesteryear - Kathleen Byron, Michael Denison and Richard Greene - making guest appearances.
