Rock&Roll, Gunn Style
dougdoepke1 October 2015
Guys—it's a cruel opening hook when one really luscious babe (Doris) gets throttled. Needless to say, I wanted to see more of her. Anyhow it's a fairly routine episode, but with a rather surprise ending. Pete's hired to find out who's blackmailing an old army buddy turned rock&roll impresario. Apparently the blackmailer is also trying to throttle the blonde babe, so we know he's a really bad guy. Anyhow, Pete gets an intimate cuddle with Edie, some good sharp banter with Jacoby, and lots of shadowy lighting. And catch that r&r singer, a Jimmy Clanton clone, circa 1960. Apparently, this was one of the actor's only two roles. I can see why. No, the entry's nothing special, but still shows off many of the series' strengths. And, oh yes, actor McLeod (Mitch) later made his bones as the captain on the long-running series The Love Boat (1977-87). Frankly, I didn't recognize him here.

The October 2015 reviewer called that "r&r singer, a Jimmy Clanton clone, circa 1960"----Nope, dave howe played the characterization more like Ronnie Hawkins in head, shoulder movements and voice. If you know Gavin McLeod, he is totally recognizable here, throughout his early acting career, he is seen as lean, slightly chunky, totally chunky or fit. He's lean in Peter Gun. What is interesting in this part, is how the disguise he uses totally changes his appearance. LOL

Faulty Premise
nbrice1829 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I just don't understand why writers use this faulty premise over and over again. In fact I've seen it in other episodes of Peter Gunn. Why would the person committing the crime hire Gunn to solve it? If he hadn't then no one would have known who the killer and "blackmailer" was.

By the way, Gavin MacLeod had a popular role before Love Boat, Murray Slaughter on The Mary Tyler Moore show. I recognized him immediately by his voice.
