Messengers from God

The aliens are among us and offer us unlimited healing power. But what are they planning to take in return? In every aspect, this is an above average episode, but I think that in 45 minutes it could have been done much better.

Well written and well done, but far from great

Warning: Spoilers
I won't go over the plot because a couple of reviews already have done that. Those reviews were dismissive of religious beliefs and while I may not subscribe to those beliefs myself, I would not be so dismissive. Just because a story includes a religious theme doesn't mean I would dismiss it outright. The priests seem to have some powers to fight the aliens, but, it is not clear whether those powers come from their priesthood or from the aliens. Based on the story line it seems most likely those powers come directly from the aliens.

But, just to throw it another twist, what if the aliens giving the priests powers was just what God wanted? Lol, sorry couldn't resist.

The acting was good, I thought the story could have been better, but, that might just be me because I enjoy unexpected twists at the end of these kind of stories. As an hour long show it could have built up the tension better than it did.

"We have faith in you, Father."

Warning: Spoilers
This was the first time I ever heard of the term 'interpretive dementia'. It was stated by Dr. Pallas (Chris Sarandon) to describe the nature of hallucinations that Father Anton Jonescu (Len Cariou) was experiencing. I'm pretty sure that it was made up for the story, as an internet search for the term only yields a description of dementia by itself. But it sounded good when the alien doctor came up with it. For a while, I thought Father Anton and trash town resident Carlito (Callum Keith Rennie) were seeing real demons, but in keeping with the Outer Limits fascination with invading aliens, they turned out to be visitors from an unnamed planet with a scheme to siphon off Earth's atmosphere in order to save their home world. If you think hard about it, you won't come up with any good reason why they just couldn't have done that without all the middlemen the story called for, with Father Jonescu being asked to hold a worldwide press conference regarding the miraculous healing power he was granted by the aliens. Fortunately, Father John Royce (Louis Ferreira) made the save for Earth when he was able to vanquish the alien doctor with a bit of their own hands-on technique which brought him back from the dead. It wasn't so fortunate for Father Anton though, but given what had already occurred with his subordinate Father John, why couldn't he be brought back from the dead too?

Fundamentalists, Arise
Hitchcoc27 February 2014
A priest who ministers to the homeless and disenfranchised, is able to see the faces of tormentors as an alien species. He has become frustrated with his lack of accomplishment and begins to lose faith. Add to that the fact that he has been given a death sentence, about three months to live. He confronts the aliens but is finally able to meet one of them. Not only does this person cure his disease, he give him the power to heal himself. He begins by saving the life of a young woman who is comatose after an accident crossing a street. Of course, he now has celebrity and for a while begins to bask in his fame. He has a colleague, a young priest who sees Jesus as the only one with healing power. He suspects something isn't kosher (oops! I guess they are Catholics). This is ultimately a moral battle, but its foundation, for me, is pretty much a cliché and depends on things that I find pretty restrictive when it comes to belief. It is interesting just as an "us" versus the aliens tale but the filmmakers couldn't resist going the next step. The acting is quite good and the scenes in the street are quite striking.

Squint heard enough and you'll find passable entertainment

Cynical Father Anton Jonascu (Len Cariou) while giving food to the homeless with fellow more optimistic Father John Royce is attacked when the police ambush the community homeless shantytown. While he's on the ground reeling from the pummeling, he looks up at the police officer and sees a demon. Now losing his faith in God, diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, and seeing hell-spawn, he's on the road to find answers to various questions he has. However not everyone he encounters can or should be trusted in this David Schow written episode. This was an alright episode, if utterly predictable, But for as for as David's written stuff for the visual medium goes, this is among his better efforts. and I cringe when I think of Texas chainsaw massacre 3,TCM: the Beginning, Critters 3 & 4, and the atrocious We all scream for Ice Cream. So the fact that this episode is simply OK is indeed cause to rejoice.

My Grade: C
