Chris at His Worst
Hitchcoc7 March 2024
There are three stories here. First, we have Ruth-Anne handing Maurice a check for 5000 dollars and taking ownership of her store. Maurice, who wants everyone to be in his debt, has trouble with this and the two become confrontational. Soon, poor Ed is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Maurice tells him he can no longer work for Ruth Anne, because Ed is deep in his debt for what would be seen as acts of kindness early in his life. The second involves Joel's inability to handle down time at the clinic. He is going stir crazy. In one of the best quiet moments, we see Marilyn on one side and Joel on the other. They have made a bet that Joel can't sit in a chair for five minutes and the cinematographer gives us a wonderful moment. Finally, Chris decides to check in to a monastery to lead the quiet life playing by rules he has read about in books. There is another monk there who has a vow of silence. Of course, Chris never shuts up. He is insufferable and won't leave the poor person alone. There is a smugness in him that really wears on me at times. This is one of them. Then there is a pontificating poem at the end. Too much.
