Michael's mother shows up at the station. She travels the world with a pompous classical musician. She is cold and judgmental. She criticizes Michael in front of people and makes him feel small. Generally, he is such jerk, but we feel sorry for him. He stops doing his work and starts painting, writing, increasing his vocabulary, and playing the violin (all badly, of course). Dick suffers from his absence. There is a great scene where he meets with the guys in the production meeting. Michael hasn't got him a guest for the week. But the best part is dog food commercial that Dick is forced to do so Michael can keep his job. Dick ends up with liverwurst on his cheek, and strawberry ice cream in his ear, and the dog won't go for it. Stephanie also has some great lines as she attacks Michael.

Michael's mother visits and looks down on her son's job, thinking it is not artistic enough.
A very funny Michael episode and shows him in a sympathetic light for once. His mother is played by Ruth Manning, who had a memorable role on the All In The Family episode Edith's Friend, playing Edith's Aunt Rose. The funniest scene here is when Dick is forced to do a dog food commercial, with an uncooperative dog. In a later scene, Michael tells Stephanie that his mother would criticize things he made in art class when he was a boy. A funny line has Stephanie saying "Whenever I made something in art class, my parents would buy it."
