The dreaded fourth season
kevinolzak23 September 2016
"Limited Engagement" kicked off the fourth and final season, the ratings now so low that only gophers were watching. With 1980's "Popeye" still fresh in the memory, Robin Williams had made the transition to big screen movie star, but still expected Mork to run for at least a fifth season, but the show plummeted to 60th from its top 3 finish in its debut year, unexpectedly swift and precipitous. The notion of having Mork and Mindy get married had the identical result as it had on I DREAM OF JEANNIE, a change in the relationship that spelled doom for the show, but one would have expected something more interesting for this proposal episode. Flowers decorate Mindy's apartment as Mork has made extensive plans for this moment, only to be foiled by her sudden exit to seek advancement at the TV station, with Foster Brooks' Miles Sternhagen getting a mention, and Pat Cranshaw's Jake Loomis popping up briefly (his third of four appearances). Robert Donner's Exidor also makes a welcome entrance, but only for one scene to demonstrate how Mork should try his next proposal. Mindy is understandably reluctant to wed an alien, but his ardent pursuit of her wears down any resistance, and the thought of losing him forever is the straw that broke the camel's back. The one intriguing element comes at the very end, as Mork's intention to wed his bride Mindy earns a stern rebuke from Orson, leaving the audience hanging until next week. If only the entire episode didn't ring so false, not at all what writer Brian Levant intended, scripting for the second and last time. All these years later, it's actually painful to watch these two characters behave like this, no fault of the actors who try their best, but with things getting off to such an awful start things would only get worse.
