Quotes

  • Lt. Randall Disher : The Zaleski alibi checks out. He was in bed making a phone call at the exact time of death.

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : Yeah, it's not the ex-husband.

Lt. Randall Disher : No, sir. So, uh, where does that leave us?

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : It leaves us with McDowell.

Lt. Randall Disher : The boyfriend?

    Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : Yeah.

Lt. Randall Disher : He checked out. He ran the whole race.

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : Okay, let's say that McDowell did pass the chip off to another runner.

Lt. Randall Disher : That was your idea, sir.

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : You're damn right it was.

Lt. Randall Disher : You're thinking Tonday.

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : No, no. Their times don't match up exactly.

Lt. Randall Disher : Well, then who?

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : All right. Here's my idea.

[turns over a whiteboard to show a series of equations]

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : Let's say there were six runners.

    Lt. Randall Disher : Six?

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : Yeah, Tonday, McDowell, and these four guys: Harvester, Blanchard, Crowe and Davidson. They pass the chip back and forth among them. They were all running in the vicinity and...

Lt. Randall Disher : Like a conspiracy.

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : Well, no. I've worked the time out on this graph.

    [takes it out]

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : Passing it back and forth, the time works out almost exactly. What do you think?

Lt. Randall Disher : Yeah, this is worth looking into, sir.

[Stottlemeyer promptly crumples the graph up and throws it away]

Captain Leland Stottlemeyer : It's all-no, it's not, it's insane. There is absolutely no connection between those six men.

Lt. Randall Disher : Yeah, you're right. It's-I was just playing devil's advocate with that. Uh-

[hits the play button on the tape of the marathon]

Sportscaster : There is something you don't see every day. A runner in this race with four legs.

  • [first lines. We see several views of the quiet city, and then see the starting gun for the marathon going off]

Sportscaster : [voiceover, overlaid with clips of marathon runners]  And there's the starting gun, kicking off the 25th annual Chronicle Marathon, San Francisco. Over 6,000 runners in the race today, and it is perfect running weather. And there is Tonday Mawwaka, number 534.

[We see Tonday, #534, followed closely by Trevor McDowell, #549]

Sportscaster : What a story he is. The legendary "Proud Lion". He's a two time Olympic champion, and he's come all the way from his homeland of Nigeria to run in today's event, which he's referred to as his final lap. Of course, Tonday's threatened to retire before, but if this does turn out to be his valedictory race, it'll be quite a day to remember. Of course, we'll be checking in with his progress all through our continuous coverage of the marathon.

[Monk, wearing a baseball cap, and Sharona arrive on one of the streets]

    Sharona Fleming : Two cameras?

Adrian Monk : Yeah. In case one breaks. Where is he?

Sharona Fleming : Well, he won't be near the front. I mean, you know, he's 65 years old.

Adrian Monk : Sixty-three. He's my idol. Did I mention that?

Sharona Fleming : About a million times.

Adrian Monk : No, seriously, Tonday Mawwaka is the greatest runner who ever lived. I saw him run in Los Angeles in 1973. He was 400 yards behind with less than a mile to go. He had nothing left, and somehow he just-he just found it. It was the most amazing finish. I can't believe you never heard of him.

[spots a man with an askew sweater]

    Sharona Fleming : What?

Adrian Monk : That man. He missed a button.

Sharona Fleming : Don't worry about it, okay? Come on, just have fun.

Adrian Monk : 63 years old, he's still running the marathon. I've got to get into shape.

Sharona Fleming : No, you're in great shape.

Adrian Monk : Nah, I used to be. Now if I can't find the remote control, I just watch whatever's on.

[focuses his camera in on the man with the askew sweater]

Adrian Monk : Look at him. How can he stand it? Hold on to this.

  • Sportscaster : [Monk is watching the marathon tape while working out in his apartment]  And, of course, our cameras will be there at the finish line and our microphones as well. We'll have interviews with the winners, the lead runners and also a coverage of the presentation of the trophy. And here comes the group that everybody's waiting for as they run through the Castro area. Once again, a huge applause for the ageless Tonday Mawwaka, still running steady and acknowledging the fans and he's loving this, and why not?

    [Monk does wall stretches]

Sportscaster : Let's get a shot now from our motorcycle cam, just ahead of Tonday's group.

    [Monk has a bright idea]

Sportscaster : And once again, of course, Tonday has told us he's planning to call it a career after this, but hey, he's said that before, and besides, there are various rumors...
